Picking Up The Pieces . . . Slowly

Sadly, we are having to work extra hard at our money-paying job this week to make up for consequences of certain of our actions in Nevada last weekend. Please forgive us for being slower than usual this week in picking up the pieces. Thankfully, despite all the pieces, we are sure that our spirits were refreshed, and minds enlightened by the trip -- one way or another. And not a moment too soon. The autumn equinox is in three days. We are drivers. We are winners. Things are gonna change. We can feel it. We will be here this weekend with picks, and back next week to a more regular posting pace.

In the meantime, please help pick us up by having a look at this weekend's action. Some games of interest are: LSU -2 over Auburn, Michigan St.-9 over Notre Dame, Akron -10.5 over Army, Ohio State -20.5 over Troy. On Sunday there's: Eagles -3 over Steelers, Cowboys -3 over Packers, Vikings -3.5 over Panthers, and the most intriguing game on the board to us, the Ravens -2 over the Browns. Yes. The Ravens are favored to send our Browns to an 0-3 start. Fascinating.

We'd love to read your thoughts about this action in the comments. Remember, such efforts on your part benefit the entire Cleveland Frowns community.

For example, comment of the week for last week goes to "paula," who offered us a winning pick with Notre Dame over Michigan, and sound reasoning to back it up. "Surely the football gods will be satisfied by ND's sacrificial offering (the Lou Holtz statue) and will grant the Fighting Irish a win over Michigan."

Runner-up is "bj," who said, "whether you agree or not, good times with the comments." True.

Also, if you missed it, Rick Reilly talked about us last week in ESPN Magazine in a piece on which sports franchise "rules" each of a number of American cities. He's surely correct that the Browns "rule" Cleveland. And we like his supporting argument: "Name one other city that lost a team and had the league give it back! Name, uniforms, everything!" But we're really not sure about the "everything" part.

Freedom is NOT free.

Picks picks picks people. We need picks.

College: For your 4 games the only two I'd be intersted in putting money on is LSU and OSU. I'll be passing on the ND and Akron games. Just don't have a real good feel for the outcomes there. Akron laying 10 on the road is scary and I haven't decided how much ND has improved, plus those games with MSU always seem to be weird, close barnburners. If I had to pick it would be Akron and ND, but I don't like them enough.

I love the OSU bet. They are going to be angry and 20.5 is nothing. No Ohio connection for Tressel to either keep the points down. More importantly, the Troy team is not made up of a bunch of kids who wanted to go to OSU, like most of the other smaller Ohio schools. Always thought that extra motivation mattered.

Auburn looked awful last week, love LSU here. I think the AU Tigers were overrated in the preseason. But we will find out for sure this week. Also, how about Arizona only laying 3 on the road against an awful UCLA team? They also have the awful RN, whom you have previously well-documented as being evil. Take Zone and lay the figgie

Zona. Intriguing. Did you see Zona get worked by New Mexico last week? Maybe New Mexico is underrated. Based on the pre-season write-ups, that seems reasonable. Like Zona.

Thanks, d.

I like the Titans by five over Houston.

A certain free bird savvy sir that we both know was recently spared jail time by Tennessee police which I think bodes well for the state.

Plus a second week bye for the Texans is a big boo and I think Vince Young's psychological difficulties, of whatever sort they actually are, will have an eye opening effect on the team. I expect them to manhandle Houston. Sorry it's not one that you singled out, but it jumped off the board at me.

I think the Tit-ans will have a good year.

don't be sorry for picking games that we don't single out! we're just trying to stir the pot.

we like the titans this year (and this week) too.

I like the Mud Hens to take their IL division next year. I'd start layin' the wood now.

MSU is the pick of the week. ND still sucks and beat a Mich team that sucks even worse. ND only won that game because of the Lou tribute...Mich fumbled 7 times (lost 4)...MSU rolls...38-14.

Staying away from Dallas-GB. Too much hype, too much offense. Plus, I'm still not sure just how good these two teams are. Dallas's defensive was as horrific as its offense was good last week. I like GB, but Rodgers still hasn't performed in a huge game like this, so I want to see how he does before laying my cash on the line.

Like the Panthers. AP missed some practice this week, Gus F is starting. The Vikes D is tough, but that's mainly their run D. I think Carolina has enough balance to hurt them. Plus that Stewart kid is lookin' good. The points are icing. I'll probably take the juice on them to win.

Steelers-Eagles: Steelers D has been tough, but hard to say how well they have been tested. The Texans didn't come to play and the weather last week was too awful for high scoring. -3 is basically HFA, so the question is whether you think the Eagles are better than the Steelers. I say no, and coming off that Monday night game I think they are due for a letdown, despite the Steelers secondary injuries. I'll take the Steelers or just stay away, haven't decided yet.

The BROWNS!!! 0-2, going to Baltimore. I really like Cleveland here. The Ravens have had the extra time off, but I think the Browns are going to be desperate and take this game. Plus, I think they are better than the Ravens. I'll take the points. And feel good about it.

In the same vein, how about the Jags? +5.5 at Indy. Both of these teams have underachieved due to injury. This line is tempting. Especially since the Jags seem to always play Indy tight anyway.

I hate to put actual dollars on Jon Kitna, but the Lions getting 4.5 against San Fran will almost certainly have me doing so. That's actually my favorite line this week.
