Hollywood Bray Update

As we wrote in our Draft preview, we're willing to start on a new page with Braylon Edwards in 2009. We're willing to take the chance that Bray-bray learned something from last season, which he entered obviously focused far more on his Hollywood dreams than on being the best football player that he could be. Recall that we were highly alarmed by an ESPN Magazine feature on Braylon during which he:

1) Claimed that he'd "like to be the King of Cleveland because [he's] doing the exact same things consistently, like [LeBron has] been doing;

2) "Whip[ped] out his iPhone and call[ed] his tailor . . . [because he] ha[d] an idea for a suit, and . . . want[ed] to brainstorm the concept”;

3) Got geeked up over hanging out with the Entourage cast, and advised us that "[i]t's who you're shaking hands with, who . . . are the people who get the roles";

and, most upsettingly,

4) Explained that his cologne, Bond No. 9, "serves a higher purpose" as his "war cologne," a "strong, masculine scent . . . [that he] wear[s] . . . when [he's] trying to show confidence or be dominant.’"

We wondered generally whether it would be possible for anyone, even a person with the physical gifts of Edwards, to perform at a high level in the NFL with his focus so much on something other than his NFL career. We hoped that Braylon would remember that he had a great thing going with his NFL gig, and that he would have plenty of time and money with which to pursue his Hollywood dreams once the NFL gig is up. We also specifically wondered what would happen if Braylon became distracted by his Hollywood dreams while he was on the football field, such as if he got a good idea for a suit mid-game.

Since if we're doing anything here at Frowns, we're building a record, we're obliged to share with you this bit we just uncovered in the most recent issue of ESPN Magazine that reveals that even our specific concerns were well-founded. On the NFL Insider page of the Mag, they ran a small feature on former Giant and current "free agent safety and up and coming model" Will Demps, in which he "reveal[ed] the ujpside, and dark side of the posed life." Demps explained that his "teammates tease [him] in the locker room. Everyone calls [him] Pretty Willie, and they hang up magazines [he's] been in. But guys who want a second career outside of football come to me for advice."

Guys like GUESS WHO!

"Last year I was with the Texans [the non-Playoff team who, coincidentally, beat the Browns at Cleveland Stadium in a game that the AP described as leaving the Browns "beaten, battered and bewildered," "their season in shambles"], and when we played [WHOOPED] the Browns, Braylon Edwards asked me between plays if we could talk after the game about modeling and acting."

Whatever else this indicates, at the very least it shows that Braylon's head is somewhere else than on the football game when he's playing in the football game. If Braylon wants to go Hollywood, he should cancel his contract with the Browns and go do that, but the level of play in the NFL is too high for players -- even players with Braylon's talent -- to play at the highest level (the level that Braylon is being paid to play at) with their minds not focused 100% on the task at hand. Braylon's sorry 2008 season should be all the proof that anyone needs of this.

We're surprised that anyone would wonder what happened to Braylon last season when the answer seems so clear. Like we said, we are willing to give Braylon another chance this season, but we'd feel a lot better about this if he would admit, on the record, that his Hollywood dreams distracted him last season, and that he's rearranged his priorities in recognition of this. As far as we know, no member of the press has asked him to do this. We can only hope that ManKok has in private. The point is that the problem with Braylon is no mystery. Whether that problem can be solved is what remains to be seen.

Ill game last night. I actually watched the Cleveland telecast through Extra Innings. Weather Education day is May 13th and May 28th. You guys gotta get on that.

Cliff Lee looked pretty good last night, looks like he is putting solid pitching performances up after his first outing that everyone started jumping on this guy...anyways like i said give him 10 starts to judge how his year will go...anyways Braylon should quit football if he's more interested in hollywood-if he plays like last year again he won't be missed one bit.

Dude's control is out of... uh... control. Still.

Frowns, it was a tough loss, but at least it was ya boy Bay who hit the homer.

Cleveland Frowns said...

Um...thought this was clear, but there is no such thing as a tough Tribe loss for us here at Frowns unless we've wagered on them, as long as that thing stays on those hats.

What is weather education day?

lenny k said...

Frowner Friday I have declared Wahoo Hat day, everyone will be wearing Wahoo hats when they are working, lets see what kind of turnout i get/complaints...ill keep you updated.

Cleveland Frowns said...

Wish you were our boss, Len.

I don't know what Weather Education Day is, but there was a snowflake mascot high-fiving fans. It seems like it's a day specifically designed to get school field trips in the door for half price tix (also advertised).

Fine, it wasn't a tough loss, it was a win for justice. Only... doesn't the win propogate baseball's skewed economics? So it's not a Just win after all. So would you say no one "won" last night, in grander terms?

I'm just curious is all, because I like it when Frownie commandments collide.

Pittsburgh is for Man Lovers said...

I can't tell if that is Will Demps' Magnum, Le Tigre or Blue Steel.

Cleveland Frowns said...

Man Lovers, think that's his, "peep my necklace, sistaz." Not sure though. Great question.

Bryan: Nothing collides here. Every Tribe loss isn't a victory for Wahoo, otherwise the team couldn't get good enough to have excruciatingly painful losses. The point is that so much w/ the Tribe is such a mess that we have a hard time caring about it.

re: exchange with Will Demps

That's called 'talking a little jibber jabber', Frowns. No harm no foul.

Seems like Braylon should be pretty easy to motivate what with all these grand ambitions. Too bad 'bout that coach.

And why is Jason Bay your boy?

'Hey I want you all to meet my boy Jason. He glows in the dark!'

damn cops.

damn grunts.

Cleveland Frowns said...

Bay USED to be our boy back in the day when he was on the Buccos and back when we used to let ourselves get caught up in/dragged down by the lower form of gambling that is fantasy sports. We drafted him late in his breakout season and called our team BAY DAY, in line with earlier team names like Vlad's Dads and "The Long Arm," which was named after Matt "The Long Arm of the" Lawton. The only fantasy league we ever won was a football one where our team was named "Deteriorating Synapses."

Fred Coupon said...

Was Frank Wychek on the team?

Cleveland Frowns said...

Another great question, but, sadly, no, Wychek was not on that team.

TE was Shockey. We had Gannon at QB (it was his Supe Year w/ the Raiders), and Pitt Plax and Jet Laveranues as our WRs. Can't remember our RBs or anything else about it but that Gannon was YOOJ.

Bikram Roy said...

Btw frownie, yes of course braylon's effectiveness last year was down but do you actually think he was talkin to the DB's about his modelling plans the year before when he lived up to his potential??

Small talk in between plays is status quo my friend, I think this is clearly another case of you reaching for an angle, and I don't buy it. Does he have issues catching the ball, yes, but not sure if putting a gag order on on him is the answer.

d said...

Weather Education Day is a day when the Tribe gives group discounts to kids' classrooms. They are always day games during the week. They have little packets they give to the kids (with info and prizes) and there are all kinds of random weather factoids given by (mostly) local forecasters over the jumbotron during the game. Basically it is an attempt to give science teachers an excuse to convince their school to let them take their kids to the ballpark for a day. Lots of little league teams show up on these days too. It is marketing, but fun. Or maybe it is just fun because as an adult you feel like you are playing hooky from work by going to a day game during the week.

So, basically just another way to market the team and draw attendance.

Cleveland Frowns said...

Bik, we know that you kick it with the likes of Iguodala and we're generally prone to believe you when you tell us that this kind of jibber-jabber is status quo, but the point is that this particular item of jibber-jabber is reflective of a larger problem that has been well-documented. Were we searching for an angle in our initial post about the ESPN article? Because it's the same angle.

We're not asking for a gag order, we're asking for a reassessment of his priorities. Again, the jibber-jabber, along with the ESPN article, and his subpar performance, is reflective of where those priorities were last season.

Not sure what your first question means, but we would guess that Braylon wasn't talking so much with DBs about his modeling plans in his one good year.

Bikram Roy said...

sorry typo, what i meant was that i'm sure braylon was runnin his big mouth in 07 maybe even more than he was last year.

i also suspect his priorities will be more focused since it's a contract year for him. actually, maybe he doesn't care as much since he has a promising modeling career awaiting him.

lenny k said...

Im with frowner on this one, he's not reaching for an angle here...we expect Bray to produce at a pro bowl level, and what was his biggest problem last year? catching the ball...which typically means he is not focused on the task at hand. This lingered throughout the whole year, yes there is a lot of talking between players, but once the ball is snapped, for 99% of NFL players they focus on the play and make plays-something Braylon did not. So, yes, maybe what frowner is getting at is correct he needs to cut the extras off the field and between plays if he cant focus enough to catch the freaking ball

Bikram Roy said...

look we all know that he needs to do something to improve his concentration or whatever it is that is the problem with him catching the ball. no one knows. we do know that it's not for a lack of repititions or whatever other drills they had him doing throughout the season last year to get him to improve. but to try to be "Dr. Frown" and takes stabs on suggestions on what would help him seems to me to be a reach. we don't know what it is that is causing the problems. is asking Demps to speak about business interests after the game a breach of "player concentration policy", which results in dropped ball syndrome?? i don't think so. ever watch an nba game??? or sit courtside and hear the type of stuff being said?? sure stopped ben gordon the other day. i mean come on dr. frown.

YES, he needs to improve on last year's performance, and he is definitely not the best quote machine out there, and his mouth tends to get him in trouble with fans who think that an NFL player can't walk and chew gum at the same time.

i for one think he's going to have a solid year, if only if it's for a nice new contract. fine by me.

lenny k said...

Bottomline is he doesnt think on the field, between stupid penalties of blocking people in the back, and dropping the ball his mind wasn't in it last year, like i said 99% can walk the walk and talk the talk- or however that saying goes...all frowner is suggesting is that Braylong cant talk and play at the same time- he did go to Michigan-how smart can he be?

Biff said...

Interesting post frownie. The sad part is that Braylon was like this before the Browns even tabbed him with the 3rd pick. The guy had weird glamour shots of himself taken before he ever put on an NFL uniform. So, I guess the question then becomes, why would any team take a guy, no matter how talented, who is so obviously a turd. It would be one thing for a team that was looking for one final piece. But for a team like the Browns that always needs their picks to be solid contributors for years, how do you just completely disregard a crippling character flaw like doucheiness?

Bikram Roy said...

excellent point Biff, hence a lot of people being a bit concerned when we drafted him. but it is what it is, he's on our team for at least another year, let's hope he has a great year in what will most likely be his last season as a brown before he goes on to win a super bowl for someone else.

lenny k said...

Yah, good point biff, he had a problem of dropping the easy balls in college to, especially in big games...suppose things will never change with him, but i guess we have settle for good catches on tough balls and drops on easy passes...and it is the browns we're talking about here biff as well

Cleveland Frowns said...

Interesting. Would like to see these pre-draft glamour shots.

For those who don't know, Biff has a good site at Cry Me a Cuyahoga River, link is in our sidebar.

Pittsburgh is for Man Lovers said...

Douchieness is only a crippling character flaw if he doesn't catch the ball. See: Owens, Terrell.

Cleveland Frowns said...

Another good point by PisforMLs, but it's probably still up in the air as to whether TO's douchiness is crippling or not.

paula said...

we don't have to settle for anything lenny. that includes good catches on tough balls and drops on easy passes (see bray bray) as well as good passes on the occasional long ball and incompletes on easy routes (see D.A.).

settling sucks. (for sure it sucks way worse than douchiness. unlike douchiness, which might lead to crappy results on the field (again, see bray bray) but doesn't necessarily lead to crappy results on the field (as has been pointed out, see TO), settling necessarily leads to losing.)

Bikram Roy said...

it's not a matter of settling, it's the reality of the situation. he's a #1 receiver in the NFL, and especially on the clowns. who else is going to be our #1 threat to catch the ball?

braylon is under contract for one more year, who knows maybe they will still move him, but as of now he's our best receiving threat. future modeling plans, douchiness, and dropped ball aside, he still commands respects from the opposing defense and creates spacing for the other recievers and running game.

lenny k said...

Exactly Bik, Paula your missing my point- as i dont play on the browns, and since I can't trade him myself (Im not the GM Paula) then yes we have to settle for at least one more year of Braylon on this team doing things he has been doing his whole career.

paula said...

you're missing my point lenny - we're not the ones settling - that's mankok. mankok doesn't have to settle. mankok can certainly move both bray bray and d.a., and should. maybe then our #1 receiving threat wouldn't suck. (or, to put it another way, when your #1 receiving threat sucks, you should trade him.)

Bikram Roy said...

well unless someone makes them an offer they can't refuse, it seems that ManKok decided that the team is in better position to win with Braylon as the #1, since the cupboard is bare. no sense dumping him for players who may not be as good as braylon. what he brings to the table, particularly with the success of larry fitzgerald and plax these past couple years is the tall athletic receivers are very dangerous. they may think that their coaches might be able to get through to him where some previous coaches have not.

again, i think since he is so money and fame driven that he will rebound this year and play well for his next contract.

lenny k said...

There is a reason why Braylon has been rumored in trades to NYG, and he is still in cleveland, Mankok is demanding quite a bit for our 1 receiver...rightfully so, but Im with Bik- contract year for braylon means he may be a little more focused this year...as all players are in it for the money. Im not "settling" on anything, and as you put it mankok is, are you ready to tab Robiskie as our #1 receiver?

Anonymous said...

g*d no. i hate the robiskie pick. i think it was settling at it's very worst - settling for the "safe" pick, and settling for a home-town pick that'll supposely go over well in cleveland. awful.

i don't have high hopes for mankok not settling. i think they'll settle for bray bray, and hope for the best, as you guys suggest. i'm just less optimistic than you as to how succesful the settling strategy will be.

paula said...

didn't mean to be anon on that last comment, but i trust you knew it was me.

Bikram Roy said...

uhh, i don't think ManKok really cares about winning over the fans, they could've done that by taking Maleuaga who clearly was a fan favorite.

as far as drafting robiskie. i believe "position scarecity" was what they were thinking. with as many receivers that were off the board by the time our pick came along, i think they felt they needed to make a move for robiskie because he may have been gone by the time 50 came around. and our cubboard would be even more bare in the receiving corps.

they really like the defensive guys they brought in and felt they could address some other holes on defense later in the draft.

overall i like the moves, i probably would've taken Oher instead of Mack, but can't wait to see "Mack" again on a browns jersey!

paula said...

great call on the mack jersey.

i wore my brian sipe all last year, to honor the "real" #17 brownie.

lenny k said...

Ya, as i said the other day, i agree with Oher if you go the Oline route in the draft, bik.

I am optimistic that Braylon will have a better year as it is his contract year, and hopefully the browns franchise him, to get the first and third rounder when he leaves...but it doesnt take a rocket science to predict braylon will have a better year- He cant get worse than last year, can only go up which is why I choose to stay optimistic on him.

Bikram Roy said...

yeah i think optimism is the key, let's hope the former jets pay mangini back for his support and get the roster to rally behind the new staff.

if they don't Brian Cox (our new dline coach) will go NUTS on them like he did to Joey Porter last year! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9br3pctZMSc

Cleveland Frowns said...

Not sure why you guys are so high on Oher. Think Mack was a very good pick.

This post just got linked at NBC Sports.com.

Somebody's watching us. Good times. Welcome NBC readers.

Bikram Roy said...

yeah i dig mack, he should be solid and gives us some versatility since he can play center and guard so i don't think he will be a bust, but i think most draft boards had Oher projected higher than Mack. it seems ManKok prefers the more versataile player which makes sense. i just thought it would be nice to have another great tackle for 10 years on the right side. we haven't had much luck with drafting centers other than steve everett and usually you can find a solid one later in the draft. but it is what it is, i think he will do just fine, just thought we left some value on the board.

Cleveland Frowns said...

Yeah, everything you said there, but I especially like Mack because of his leadership potential.

kylmra said...

I like the fact that we drafted 3 offensive players with our first 3 picks...looks like we are trying to surround BQ with some talent (isn't it a good thing to focus on his development)...the defense can be addressed later.

Bikram Roy said...

BQ, u mean BJQ? I have a feeling that's what brady's nickname will be after another year of clipboard duty.

kylmra said...

It will be disappointing if he doesn't start...what are we waiting for...do the Browns really think we can "win now"? Let the dude get some experience.
