It's unnecessary to speculate about the various base motives that could be behind the collective finger-wagging that the sports blogosphere bestowed on MLB Network talking head Matt Vasgersian yesterday to understand that Vasgersian was treated unfairly.
In case you missed it: Rockies outfielder Brad Hawpe was hit in the neck by an errant pick-off throw, which caused paramedics, out of an apparent excess of caution, to put a neck brace on him and cart him off the field. When the broadcast cut from the clip of the injury back to the studio, Vasgersian asked the producers to re-run the tape to jokingly point out that one of the EMT's looked like Eagles QB Donovan McNabb. His studio co-hosts, Billy Ripken and Mitch Williams, expressed their disapproval with a round of, "dude . . . dude . . . what's wrong with you?", and his producer reminded him in his earpiece, "[y]ou know we're live, right?"
The reaction of Vasgersian's co-hosts is certainly understandable given that his joke, coming in the wake of what might* have been a rather serious injury, was probably poorly timed. But others have noisily accused Vasgersian of something much worse than bad comic timing.
The guys at KSK sermonize that "the whole 'this black person looks like a well-known black person' is kind of played out – if it was ever funny to begin with," thus, at least implicitly, accusing Vasgersian of racism.
Along the same lines, The Sports Hernia Blog accuses Vasgersian of "clearly being a fan" of "the obvious 'all black guys look the same' theme and makes a reference to the black fraternity, Lamda Lamda Lamda, from Revenge of the Nerds.
Josh Alper of NBC's local LA affiliate gets on the pulpit too, scolding Vasgersian to "leave comedy to the professionals," and advising that "if you do choose the inappropriate moment to make a joke, please try and make it a remotely funny one. 'This black guy looks exactly like this other black guy' isn't ever that joke."
Even Deadspin's Dashiell Bennet hints at racism by noting in parentheses that the EMT "looks nothing like Donovan McNabb" (see the comments re: Vasgersian's racism that the post inspired).
But here's the problem: The guy actually does look at least something like Donovan McNabb. He might even look a lot like Donovan McNabb, depending on who you ask.
Go ahead and fast forward to the 22-second mark in the above video and pause it. Now look here:
We can think of countless black guys that this EMT does not look anything like, and will make a list for you if you want to accuse us of believing that all black guys look alike, but we're pretty sure that this guy bears more than a passing resemblance to McNabb. And it's not just his eyes, nose, and mouth as they're arranged on his head. Vasgersian's joke could have been just as easily prompted by the EMT's black do-rag (a headpiece also often worn by McNabb on gameday), his facial hair (which appears to be cut exactly like McNabb frequently cuts his), and/or his double chin (see, for example, "The Athlete" page here, or see here).
It's one thing to suggest that all blacks look alike. But this isn't that. This is Vasgersian pointing out that a guy who probably does look like Donovan McNabb, looks like Donovan McNabb, maybe even to make fun of McNabb's increasingly portly profile. But NBC's Alper says "this black guy looks exactly like this other black guy," could never be funny at such a moment. KSK goes so far as to question whether such a joke could ever be funny at all. But why the qualifier, guys? What does "black" have to do with it? Because -- and this can't be news to anyone -- a lot of people find lookalikes to be amusing. This is why you can probably find a columnist in every major newspaper who uses them as a regular feature. Shucks, maybe you even find it amusing when two non-celebrities look alike -- like maybe your cousin and your buddy from the track. We sure do. The closer the resemblance, the funnier it is. If they were both wearing the same do-rag and had the same moustache, we might think it was EXTRA-funny.
But the funny police of the sports blogosphere say no go on this one. So please, folks, make sure you keep your rules straight. It's fine, even encouraged, to make all manner of derogatory jokes about homosexuals, but pointing out that two black men look alike is in obvious poor taste, even when they actually do look alike. So it's back to Byzantium for all of us.
These folks owe Vasgersian an apology.
*Also, the injury didn't even look that bad on TV, and it turns out that Hawpe only suffered a bruise (a 'contusion' is the fancy way of saying it, not a 'concussion' as Bennet reported on Deadspin). The ball was thrown (from really far away), not batted or pitched from the mound, and Hawpe was moving in the same direction as the ball when it hit him. Plus he looked like he was moving around just fine after he was hit.
UPDATE: Vasgersian apologizes, but not for racism.
UPDATE: Indisputable photographic evidence here.

I think Vasgersian's been on thin ice since he let a 'f*ck' slip on air in the studio, so he faces harsh scrutiny for every successive incident.
And McNabb-EMT guy has nothing on Fronwer-Messier.
"In Vasgersian's defense, the first time the EMT attempted to put on the neck brace, it landed at Hawpe's feet." Read that from a comment on deadspin...funny stuff.
Frowns, Your closing comment is funny..."it was thrown (not pitched) and he was moving in the same direction as the ball..." LOL...couldn't have hurt then.
They have a running joke on KSK about Hines Ward and completely mock him for being half Asian. But it's okay since we (yes, I am half-asian) all look alike. I hate Hines Ward as much as the next person with more than one branch on my family tree, but they are bunch of two-faced c*m guzzlers.
He doesn't look like McNabb until he bounces a ball five feet in front of a receiver.
We're no physicists, but we'd certainly rather be hit by a pick off throw when we're running away from it than be hit by a pitch from a mound when we're standing stationary.
When I say 3, you start running and I'm gonna throw this baseball at the back of your head...but don't worry it shouldn't hurt too bad since you'll be running away from me...
Would we rather? of course...but still doesn't mean the dude couldn't be seriously hurt from that.
he looked fine. anyway, he's a millionaire gladiator. it's not like your mom got hit in the stands.
Jerod at Midwest Sports fans updated his post after reading ours:
http://www.midwestsportsfans.com/2009/04/matt-vasgersian-asks-if-emt-is-donovan-mcnabb-after-brad-hawpe-hit-with-baseball/
His was far more reasonable than many of the others in the first place.
Ridiculous that using as useful a word as "f*ck" would put someone on "thin ice," by the way.
F*cking ay, man.
We're tempted to post the emails that the KSK guys sent in response to our emails about this post. It's really disappointing how these guys respond to reasonable criticism.
PS: Vasgersian delivered an excellent apology on MLB Net last night.

@ Cleveland Frowns:
You definitely should post those emails. As soon as those hyper senisitive a$$es are criticized, they start running their man pleasers with every little swear or insult they can think of. Boo hoo hoo.
He does look a tiny bit like Donovan McNabb (mostly because of the headwear), but not enough for an 'oh my god, that's hilarious, you're right man!'. He just whiffed with a lookalike joke is all. The racism angle is a bad ploy and I'm glad he didn't go there in his apology.
word verification: boides
remember days spent in the weight room chasing HUGE boides?
Racist
Link'd again to deadspin frowner...Braylon cant be gay, he doesnt like to hang on to balls thrown to him...
Highly doubt that Braylon is gay, but if he is, he'd definitely be a more sympathetic character to us. Thanks for letting us know, Len.
I agree with most of your post, but I don't think the guy looks like Donovan McNabb at all. I just see a black dude wearing a black skull cap. But, I do not think that undermines your points.
All we saw was a black guy in a skull cap too. And given the moment, for Vasgersian to go to the lengths he went to, to force that joke out was hilarious and ridiculous. Certainly worthy of being made fun of, which is what we did.
"Black guy! Skull cap! That's gotta be Donnie!"
Hernia: We understand that your intent was probably only to make fun of what might have been a dumb decision by Vasgersian, but think you were careless in doing so because the result was to unfairly make Vasgersian out to be at least racially insensitive. Issues surrounding race are so fraught that any suggestion that anyone made a decision that took race into consideration at all ends up having a serious impact that we're sure Vasgersian didn't deserve here.
Anyway, thanks for the comment.
Also, dude DOES look JUST like McNabb.
I suppose it would be different if Chris Rock or Eddie Murphy was making a comment about or showing us their impersonation of a white person. Everyone's heard the stereo-typical "white person voice".
People are going to make jokes you dont like or get. Get over it and move on. Life's too short to search for issues when there arent any to begin w/.
@JasonGuru: If life is too short, and there aren't any issues to comment on here, then why did you take the time to leave a comment? Is it because you're the Guru of retardedness?
