The Eye of the Beholder: Browns 6 Bills 3

The safest thing we can assume about folks whose first reaction to yesterday's glorious Browns victory in Buffalo was to talk about how "ugly" it was, or how it "set the game of football back" however many years, is that these people don't like football very much.  Of course, there's no accounting for taste, but count us with Coach Mangini in concluding that what went down in Orchard Park yesterday was simply gorgeous.

("If you're worried about the weather, then you picked the wrong place to stay.")

First, we don't suppose it's a bad thing that football games are still played outdoors in some places, and in places where weather might affect the game.  Just like with real people in real life, it can be fun to see how football teams adapt to these conditions which yesterday included swirling winds up to 30 mph that significantly impacted the football's flight path throughout the game

Yesterday the Browns adapted with a dominating performance on special teams and a serviceable running game that gave the defense enough rest to allow it to keep the clamps on the Bills offense.  They did what they could with what was available, and they won a football game.

To us and anyone else looking for signs of progress on the part of the Cleveland Browns, it couldn't have been any less boring.  And we can't imagine that anyone who's complaining about it today is much of a Browns fan.  Bills fan, we understand that it might not have been fun for you, of course, but you couldn't have been bored either.  And you non-Browns/Bills fans who were bored, and who for whatever reason didn't have the option to change the channel (questionable enough circumstances there*), you obviously didn't have a wager pending on the game.  However else you might have done it, you should at least know that it's free to open an online sportsbook account, and most if not all of those books will let you wager as little as $5 on a single game.  Point being, you had options, the least impressive of which is to voice a negative opinion as to what's largely if not entirely a subjective matter, a matter of taste.  It's a lot like complaining about what's in someone else's grocery cart, or on someone else's plate.

Back to that gem of an American football game, there was a lot of pressure on the Browns to take advantage of what might be their only game against a non-playoff team until they head to Detroit on November 22, and they didn't crack.  There was no question it would be a tough week for a passing game that lost one of the league's most physically-gifted receivers in the middle of the work week, even without the swirling wind.  The Browns survived this too, and here there's no place to go but up.  This road win against a team that had the Patriots beaten in Week 1, along with developments yesterday in Denver and Baltimore, renders further ridiculous the notion that this Browns team is the worst or even one of the very worst in the NFL.  Again, look at that opening schedule

Whatever the talent level on this Cleveland Browns team, yesterday's win -- the way it went down -- was the clearest signal we've received since when (?) that there's a right way and a wrong way to do things in Brownstown.  It's safe to say that the Browns won by thoroughly dominating one aspect of the football game.  This, one of those games that for the better part of the last decade was one that the Cleveland Browns would have lost.  It's safe to say that the Browns won this game not necessarily because they were more talented than the opponent, but because they were organized better.  Talent will come.  But say it one more time:  Yesterday, the Browns were organized better.

----------

*Implicit here is the suggestion that any non-Browns/non-Bills fan who found this game boring or ugly and didn't have the option not to watch it because he was being paid to watch the game for some reason or other might find something else to do for a living, or at least farm that Browns/Bills work out to someone who gives a crap.**

**As per "we love our towns and our teams, etc.," we'd be remiss if we didn't question those who say things like: "Cleveland vs. Buffalo ... Football representative of the quality of our cities."  For starters, we'd ask these people what it means for one city to be of "better quality" than another.  We further wonder what these people would think about what's a good city and what's not if/when the Colorado River runs completely dry, and whether there shouldn't be a file kept on folks who say such things for use with respect to waiting lists for health care at the Cleveland Clinic.  Just asking.

Agree to disagree. That was probably my last week of watching...DA going 2-17 was just atrocious. Trent Edwards is a total bum and still completed 15 of his 31 passes. His huge arm wasn't affected by the wind. That game was completely terrible and we only won because of Roscoe Parrish and they fact they were rocking 2nd and 3rd string LBers and OLers and we "hammered" them for 2 huge FGS. I would implore you to not drink the Kool-Aid because this is one of the top 5 worst teams in the NFL. I would say it is the Raiders, Browns, Rams, Bills and Chiefs at this stage. The Chiefs are the best of this bunch though.

PS Whats up with no baseball talk? The Red Sox got swept, Cards got swept and Phillies-Rockies is looking like a good series so far. Maybe the Angels can knock of the Evil Empire in the next round.

I would also have to say after watching the Pats game that Brady is looking like an average QB at best. He missed Moss on more than a few potential big plays and just looks uncomfortable in the pocket. I don't know if he is coming all the way back or now. Manning and Brees look so much better than he does at this stage at the season.

Ignore signs of progress at your own peril. Even if it is one of the worst 5 teams in the NFL, it's a better team than it was last season. What do you say about almost beating the Bengals? And that we might have won in Denver with DA at the helm?

Also ignore that we might have expected a rough week for the Browns passing game given the transition. But if you want to focus on the quarterbacks, consider that DA might have completed more passes if he was throwing to T.O. and Lee Evans.

And again, the Browns won.

A win is a win is a win. Congrats.

How is beating one of the other 5 worst teams in the league 6-3 progress? You don't address the fact they are playing with 2nd and 3rd string LBers and OLers and committed about 15 penalties at home. Excuse me for calling out historically bad QB play in a complete game and the fact that we couldn't even score a TD against junk like that. Last time I checked this team won 4 games last year. If you think winning 4 more games this year is progress then I commend you and the Browns. They are truly awesome and growing right in front of me.

D.A.'s completion percentage was largely due to about 200 dropped passes.

The Browns won because they only committed 3 penalties and had fewer turnovers. If Frowner wants to call it "better organized" so be it, but its disciplined football.

Bold prediction of the week. Browns beat stealers.

You could have lost.

Did anyone watch this game? I guess you guys are all betting on the Browns this week.

Smitty nailed it on the head, bills defense was playin all their scrubs, and yes a win is a win, but calling it gorgeous and finding comfort in that we went from worst team to maybe the 3rd or worst is not saying much, and I can't see how this offense is better than an offense with Braylon and K2 (btw, Kellen made some SICK catches yesterday). We'll see how Bray does tonight.

Joe Nathan and horrible base running by the Twins should get a ring from the Yankees if they end up winning it all.. Although I think it's the Angels and Dodgers in the Series.. Either team winning will be cool to see.

probably wouldn't go as far as calling it a "gem," but for sure i appreciate the win.

and while i agree that progress has been made, i think you're completely wrong about DA (as in, DA would have been better with other receivers and we would have won in denver with DA playing). DA is awful and inconsistent and undisciplined. he's shown exactly no improvement from last year. zero. none. DA is most certainly not the answer for the browns. we've known this for 3 years now. hope to g*d we use some of our draft picks to find the answer.

also: did you know that at their version of the muni lot, bills fans burn a ford pinto before every home game?

For what?

Mangini is rebuilding from the ground up in a way no one has ever tried to do here. The way they won that game itself was a sign of progress, especially given the problems caused by the weather, and the sudden midweek injection of uncertainty at the WR position (note, the guys were gripping not only because they didn't have Braylon, but because their roles on the team are so unsettled). This might have been the first time in ten years that the Browns beat a team not because they were more talented, but because they were coached better. If you don't see that as progress, then there's even less reason to pay attention to your conclusory griping than there was before.

Easiest thing in the world to do is complain.

Cleveland Frowns said...

That's pretty awesome about the Pinto. Do you have a source for this?

A) If you think "outcoaching" Dick Jauron and his staff is awesome then I feel bad for you. The guy is going to be fired well before the season ends.

B) I seem to remember you betting the over on the Browns at 6.5 or 7 or whatever. They are currently 1-4 and on pace to win about 3-5 games at best. If this some progress? You actually thought the team was going to be good and compete. The reality is that they suck balls. You are now saying "build them from the ground up, blah, blah". Which one is it? Did they have talent and Mangini just sucks as a coach?? Or were they really talentless and your myopic Browns glasses were on before the season started. All I heard about was how you can't underestimate this team and how much talent they really have. I guess it is easy to complain when this team has given me no (not a one) reason to be optimistic. They have made the wrong move almost 100 out of 100 times on every level (coaching picks, player picks, coaching, personnel) and they are just restarting the clock again. We now have to endure 3-4 years of some jerk rebuilding the roster to his liking and then see them be mediocre at best. I am sick and tired of it. I am sick of not drafting players that are good and going for players that fit some crappy system that X coach has installed. Josh McDaniels and Brandon Marshall are getting along fine now and winning has EVERYTHING to do with it. He supposedly didn't have any talent heading into the season and he is 5-0. Everyone thought Cincy was going to suck and they are 4-1. I want a coach who can "coach up" some of our crappy players for once. Either way nice win---good luck this week and sorry for being a total prick about the Browns. I really am sick and tired of watching godawful football games week after week.

Agreed, outcoaching Jauron can be done by a 3rd grader...he is a terrible coach and will be gone very soon i have a feeling. DA still cannot dump off to his running backs, had this problem his whole career-just has no touch. The browns would have more manageable 3rd downs if he could hit his back for a 4-5 yard gain when he has nothing downfield.

Overall, Ill take the win, but with the great field position they had all game its an embarrasment to their offense to only come away with 6 points-even in the Buffalo weather.

This was largely due to giving Brady Quinn and Braylon Edwards the benefit of the doubt at the beginning of the season, which was misplaced. Anyway, fact: The team has "competed" in each game but one.

Otherwise, apology accepted. Your frustration toward the franchise is understandable, but you're being unfair to Mangini.

Cleveland Frowns said...

Agreed, Lenny. The throws on the short passes were maddening.

predictions dont mean to much now that our 'number 1' receiver is gone and our starting qb was yanked in the 3rd game if you ask me.

Where's the obligatory bet against the Jets pick?

Maybe you're making yourself useful at work?

Man was that ever a good obligatory pick.

I really hope your logic regarding legal matters is more sound as opposed to sporting ones.

No worries, Coup. There's little that disturbs me more than these New York Jets.
