BREAKING NEWS: Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn to Sign with Yankees for 2010

The inevitable has finally occurred.  An off-record source confirmed for us this morning that, inspired most recently by former teammates and current World Series headliners Cliff Lee and C.C. Sabathia, Cleveland Indians legend and lock first-ballot Hall of Famer Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn has reached an agreement in principle to join the New York Yankees for the 2010 season.

"Ricky loves Cleveland more than anyone," our source told us, "but he wants that ring more than anything, and is sure that the team that pays $100 million more for its roster than any other team is the one that gives him his last best chance at getting it."

Our source went on to explain that with superstar slugger Pedro Cerrano having left Cleveland for similarly greener pastures long ago, then Willie Mays Hayes, Albert Belle, Manny Ramirez, Jim Thome, Bartolo Colon, then Sabathia, Lee, and Victor Martinez, that Vaughn's decision was much easier than it would have otherwise been.  "What else would Cleveland fans expect, really," (s)he asked.  "Why should Ricky feel bad about getting his?"

Indians GM Mark Shapiro, currently scouting the California Penal League ("CPL") for replacements for Lee, Martinez, and Vaughn, could not be reached for comment as electronic devices are not permitted on CPL facilities.

More as the story develops.

That's not funny, Bryan.

Tomlinson/Crews/Olin, RIP.

So I tried to update the Cheddar Bay sheet, and I'm not able to load it on this computer that I'm using. I'll do it tonight or tomorrow.

Will be back with a Monday Night pick.

Is there any doubt that Tomlinson's drive would have gotten a Sterling "It is high, it is far, it is... caught!"

since we're on the topic of cleveland indians in art and literature:

a 1951 chief wahoo cap features prominently in john irving's new novel. it's worn by the only native american character in the book. "the crazily grinning Chief Wahoo was a demonic, ever-watchful presence," says irving.

you should check it out frowner. irving's not quite as compelling a storyteller as his mentor, but he's still a good read.
