Happy (Valley) Action Funtime College Football Picks (and More Fun with Dawg Pound Mike!)

Most of you know, but all of you should, that we're a perfect 5-0 picking Ohio State Buckeye football games against the spread so far in 2009.  That's. a perfect. five. and. oh.  Part of our success here is due to knowing when to lay off when we don't have a read, but that's not an option today, as we're on location in Happy Valley today, partly to see the Buckeyes take on the Nittany Lions, but mostly, of course, for the Frownie Fotos.  (Preview here and . . . )

(Why?)

As for today's pick, the Tough Nuts are a lock today.  Something's just off with the State Collegians going into this one (except, of course, for the saints who we're staying with here).  Like, why does that guy up there hate Ohio State so much?  "Terrelle Cryor"?  That's just dumb.  And they couldn't even get a less haterrific "White-out" shirt right.  "Don't be intimidated, it's just me and 110,000 of my friends."  Whatever.  It's a home game.  And while the controversy over the shirt having a cross on it might seem dumb at first, did you know that you have to go to special stores to buy alcohol here in Pennsylvania?  Even more shocking, you have to go to one store to buy liquor and wine, then another one to buy beer.  Really.  If you want to make beer cheese dip in Pennsylvania, and drink whiskey while you're making it, you have to go to three different stores.*  Are you really going to trust these people about that cross?

In any event, it's sad when your best reason to hate somebody is because they're better than you.  Pryor, Western PA native, won here in Wisconsin as a freshman, and if he's ever going to come in with extra focus, it's today.  And the Buckeye defense should relish today's test.  We wouldn't be surprised if the final score is 6-3.  Ohio State +5.5 over Penn State (10 units).

As it turns out that there's only one other college football game today, and it involves our pick to win the BCS, and the potential that this might happen, so we'll post up with Alabama -7.5 over LSU (2 units).

One last thing worth noting is that a recording of our debate with Dawg Pound Mike on SportsTalkCleveland.com of yesterday has been posted. It's worth listening to Super Fan Mike keep digging.  ("You don't remember who the kicker was when you were two years old?  You are NOT a real fan!  I do not have to answer your questions!")  Also note how, even though we didn't remember if Don Cockroft was a kicker, a coach, or Don Strock, Mike still can't keep our name out of his mouth.  First thing in the morning, and he's thinking of us.  A good sign, to be sure.

And thankfully, the public seems to be turning against Mike's regressive and self-serving protest, with respected voices weighing in here and here, among other places.  We're going to keep hitting this hard -- actually, harder -- throughout the week, so stay tuned.  But for now, we're off to get happy in the Valley.  We'll do our best to keep you posted, so keep our Twitpics on your hitlist.  Happy Saturday, folks!

O-H!

*We've known this for awhile about Pennsylvania, but it really hits home when you're here to tailgate.

Are you ever going to update the Cheddar Bay picks?? It doesn't seem too fair that you don't post your picks anymore. Are you just going to update it in 4 weeks and say you are in first??

agree with smitty, though i doubt impropriety, i'd like to see cheddar bay columns up again on fridays or saturdays and get some updated standings (despite the fact i have fallen off dramatically)

I guess I wasn't really suggesting the head frownie would do anything questionable....I would just like to know if the contest is still even going on. I thought we were going to have weekly winners and all of that jazz starting this week or something. I just wondered what is going on with it and how everyone is doing. I have had a couple crap weeks in a row myself.

Well done on the "debate". The Official Roommate of Rufus on Fire and I were tearing our hair out listening to that guy. Where the hell does he get off saying he speaks only for himself when he's supposedly organizing a mass protest? (BTW, I predict it tops out between 100-200, like the Bengals "protest" a few years ago.)

Guys, I am truly sorry about not keeping the Cheddar Bay standings up. Been very busy times around here, as you know, and a big transition period. Will get it all cleaned up shortly, and we're going to have a ton of fun with it as we move into the playoffs.

As for my picks, they are my six highest unit published picks of each weekend...I see that there's a problem that I haven't noted my essay pick each week, so I guess to remedy that, it has to be my highest unit college play for the unrecorded weeks, since I could have always just gone bigger on an NFL game to cover up for losing what might have been an essay college pick.

David: Thanks! Hope you'll help to spread the word. DPM's representation of Browns fans is one of the greatest tragedies in modern sporting times.

thank you for highlighting PA's dumb liquor laws. nothing tops Massachusetts tho. don't know if it's changed recently, but no booze sold on sundays and no booze sold after 10pm and no booze sold on holidays like thanksgiving, so if you're on the road and want to show up to turkey dinner with a bottle of wine or a briefcase of miller lites, tuff luck.
