Terry Pluto on Braylon Edwards and Jamal Lewis: "What the Browns won't tell you is [what the Frowns have been telling you for weeks] the attitude of the team has improved since the trade of Braylon Edwards and the decision of Jamal Lewis to retire because of physical problems. Edwards has struggled to fit into any offense, as is obvious with the Jets. He has 23 catches in eight games since the trade, three for TDs. . . . Jamal Lewis was frustrated all season, sometimes complaining about the lack of commitment to the running game. but the truth is, Lewis is a star who lost his edge and breakaway speed."
Terry Pluto on "Opportunity Drills": "Remember the criticism fired at Eric Mangini about the "opportunity period" after each practice open to rookies, practice squad players and guys on the bench? The Browns coaches will tell you the reason they are receiving production from the unknown players such as Brian Schaefering, Marcus Benard, Chris Jennings, Evan Moore, Jason Trusnik and others who weren't on the active roster or even with the team at the start of the season is because of these extra practice periods."
A Good Idea about Josh Cribbs: via Mary Kay Cabot of the PD: "Browns offensive tackle Joe Thomas is convinced that Josh Cribbs could be a top running back in the NFL. 'There's no doubt,' said Thomas, after watching the game film of Cribbs rushing for 87 yards against the Steelers' top-ranked run defense. . . '"He must have some unbelievable vision because he could see all way back to his right, there was a lane the whole way back, like some of the greatest running backs in the NFL could. He hit a seam and took it for about 20-some yards. He kind of takes the approach it's a punt return. But the vision he's got is amazing."
A Good Idea from Josh Cribbs: Again, via Cabot: "'To give a football coach one year to turn a football team drastically around is not possible,' [Cribbs] said. 'To get rid of coach Mangini, I don't think would be a good decision for our organization. To start rebuilding all over again, this will be three different head coach regimes in the past [three] years. Who would want to come coach here knowing if they don't win right away they're gone?'"
The Latest Line from the Mangini Witch-hunt: Still flailing in the wake of last week's win over Pittsburgh, Mangini witch-hunters like the Plain Dealer's Bud Shaw have taken to struggling to compare Thursday's win to last season's win over the defending Super Bowl champs, the New York Giants. "The Browns beat the Super Bowl champs last season, but only one two games after that and the Coach and GM still got fired," the line goes.
If the Giants were the Steelers; If these Browns were expected to contend for the Super Bowl instead of rebuilding; and if it was Mangini's third year instead of his first, Shaw might be on to something. What will they come up with next? Have another look at what Marla Ridenour did yesterday, and recall Shaw's and McManamon's reaction the day after the win. Can we agree that what these folks are doing is an embarrassment?
Bernie! Bernie!: The folks at SportsTalkCleveland have posted an excellent NFL Films piece on Bernie Kosar on YouTube. Part 1 is here and Part 2 is here. You'll enjoy.

I wonder if Mike Holmgren reads Frowns.
Holmgren meeting with Randy and Bernie last night and today... CLOSE THE DEAL RANDY!
Parcells or bust!
coffee's for closers only Randy! only one thing counts in life, get them to sign the line which is dotted! you close or you hit the bricks!
Let's take off the Brown-tinted glasses and look at some truths:
Yes to Josh Cribbs at running back. He was a runner in college, the "experiment" of trying to turn him into a wide receiver needs to end. Put him in the backfield with Quinn under center and the defense has to respect that Cribbs can run the ball. That can open up the possibility of some sweet play-action passes. Of course, someone has to tell Daboll that there is such a thing as play-action, but baby steps.
Cribbs comments on bringing back Mangini don't hold much credibility. He's playing for a new contract and the Little Emperor has made it clear that he is not to be challenged. Cribbs knows to toe the party line. He doesn't want to go down with a Jamal Lewis-like "injury" - Col. Mangini in the trainer's room with a blocking sled?
Bud Shaw brought up some valid points, primarily that just because someone is leading you doesn't mean they are leading you to a better place. He also brought some well-needed perspective to the "big" win vs. Pittsburgh.
Good work, as always, from Mr. Pluto.
since there is a daily pro-mangini story nearly every day on Frowns, and a rip job on Rex Ryan and the "impatient" Jets front office almost as frequent, i thought that this was interesting stats regarding Eric Mangini's record as a DC and HC:
2005 - NE's defense under Mangini's stewardship as a first time DC: 26a
2006 - NYJ: 20
2007 - NYJ: 18
2008 - NYJ: 16
At the moment, the Jets have leapfrogged from a middle of the pack defense, to the NUMBER ONE DEFENSE IN THE NFL!!!
obviously mr. ryan knows a thing or 2 about coaching.
as far as the Brownies, as bad as last season was, they had the 26th best defense, this year 31st. now that's PROGRESS!
i know frownie's going to talk about personnel and talent, etc, etc, but Mangini's record speaks for itself. he's an average at best coach and i'm hopefuly the new GM will will make the appropriate changes to get turn this franchise into a winner and improve our category rankings in the top 10, like most successful coaches are able to do.
Bik, don't forget the Jets' cupcake schedule this season.
New post is up, by the way, on Holmgren. Freshen up.
ok, strength of schedule based on what? 2008 records?
if so, the jets have the 7th toughest schedule in the NFL this season.. whereas the browns have the 25th.

Jets improve on defense without Mangini and the Browns believe it or not get worse under Mangini...
COINCIDENCE?????
i'm sure the facts and statistics were things that Lerner did not look at when hiring Mangini, but i'm sure the new President will take a much closer things at such things.
I think if you look at the Jets and the Browns schedules, that you can't really argue with a straight face that the Jets schedule isn't much easier, regardless of what the 2008 records were.

It also might be all of those Pro Bowlers that he inherited on the Jets D, and the two he brought over from Baltimore as well. Not sure.
2 pro bowlers that he brought?? who? bart scott has never made a pro bowl, and neither has leonhard. who are you talking about????
man you really need to do some fact checking homey.
also, kris jenkins has been out the last 9 games...
not to mention the 4 defensive players Mangini took away.. i think you gotta tip your hat to Rex.
#1 Defense in the NFL - Rex Ryan and the Jets.
He's got you there Biki. The Jets have played teams that are currently 82-87 while the Browns' opponents are 94-75.
Of course, if the schedules were switched the Browns would still be 2-11 because that's a factor of the lack of leadership, not the schedule.
not sure how he's "got me" my point was that the Jets have the #1 defense in the NFL, and his counterpoint was so what, they have an easy schedule.. and i gave the S.O.S ranking they had going into the season.. if their current opponent's record to date is 82-87, that is a .485 winning percentage, which puts them right at the middle of the pack at #16. that is pretty impressive to have the #1 overall team defense in yardage and points allowed.
