In Praise of the Dolans’ “every four or five years” Pledge

by Cleveland Frowns on June 15, 2011

Even in the midst of a precipitous decline that’s all but erased the euphoria of their record-setting start, the Indians’ proximity to first place in the American League’s Central Division is still more than a nice surprise.

AL

After what happened between the Cavaliers and the kid from Akron, and with the Browns having rebooted the coaching staff for the fifth time in a decade, a fog of sports hopelessness as thick as any since the mid-’70s appeared set to descend upon Cleveland. That the Tribe has kept the clouds at bay for this long is as uplifting as it is improbable.

Best owner in town.  By far.

    Keep flying the flag, Frownster.

I as well as my pals ended up going through the best helpful hints on your web site and so instantly came up with a horrible suspicion I never expressed respect to the website owner for those techniques. The guys appeared to be for that reason excited to read through them and have now surely been taking pleasure in these things. Thanks for being so thoughtful and then for deciding on this form of cool useful guides millions of individuals are really wanting to be aware of. My personal sincere regret for not expressing gratitude to you earlier.

Welcome to my blog levaquin how to take.

Every four or five years, if we can have a shot at the World Series
and compete for the playoffs like we did in ’05, that’s as good as it
    gets.”

So in my eyes, there is really only one way for me to interpret this:  Dolan is making plenty of money, and doesn’t want to rock the boat.  If he really were hurting, then he would be making noise like most of the smaller market NBA owners.

At any rate, this is really a crucial juncture for the Indians as an organization.  Either they make an impact move to get them a bat to try and get them back in the game, or they start selling at the trade deadline, which at this point would completely run me off.

After watching this tumble lately, I’ve got a terrible feeling that it will be the latter.

    • Anonymous

selling off what/who exactly?   austin kearns?? orlando cabrera, rafael perez?  good riddance.   they are 3 out of the 10 guys the Indians have on roster who get paid more than $1m.  everyone else are signed at least thru the next couple seasons..   Hafner ain’t going anywhere..   not sure who will take a flyer on Grady and his $7.6 million right now, but with as much as he’s been hurt, wouldn’t hurt to see what sort of value we could get for him, but i highly doubt we move him..  Choo is locked up for the next 3 years, he ain’t movin..  Perez and Asdrubs ain’t goin anywhere either..

so who are we going to sell at the trade deadline???

      • Anonymous

biki makes a decent point here.  !

the guys we’d want to move at the deadline (if it came to that) are performing like suck.  here’s the salary sheet, we won’t be getting any mastersons or carrascos back if we trade any of the top three salaries.  at least not at their current production levels.

        • Anonymous

yeah big shocker huh buddy?   DERP    i think it’s pretty clear that it would be impossible for the Indians to “sell off” anyone..

          • Vari

Big shocker for sure!  No mention of LeBron!

Seriously, who’s our best pitcher right now?  That’s whom the Tribe is likely to trade.  Wait, no current Cy Youngers.

          • Anonymous

currently our best pitcher is Josh Tomlin who makes a whopping $417,200 and is signed for the next 5 years..  he ain’t goin anywhere..

but Fausto’s body of work throughout his career makes him our best pitcher..  we have club options for him the next 3 years..  but as JimKanicki said, Fausto, Grady, and Hafner, our 3 top paid players and their agents aren’t exactly at the top of any GM’s speed dial list..

WHO ARE WE GOING TO SELL???

          • Vari

Gotta agree with bupalos.  Sizemore would be the candidate.  He’s always shown potential and some brillance when healthy.  He probably has the most value on the current roster and I wouldn’t be surprised if another owner with some less frugal spending habits than our own would be willing to buck up.

          • Anonymous

Not that I disagree but just want to note that Sizemore has about 100 strikeouts to zero walks right now, also zero SBs.

          • Vari

statistically speaking he’s not having the most stellar year, for sure.  from a talent aspect though he has shown a fair deal over the past few years.  I don’t know enough about baseball to speak edumacated enough know.  Purely a spectator point of view based on the limited number of games I actually take in and various Sportscenter clips.

          • Anonymous

I think he struck out 4 times last night and looked horrible doing it. But if he gets back to the streak he was on before going down, a lefthanded +power bat with decent speed and great defense is going to be worth the money to a contender. And I think Dolan would deal him pretty much just to escape the money next year whether we got anything back or not.

But then I don’t think Dolan is the best thing since sliced bread.

          • Anonymous

Sizemore would be the obvious one. He’d definitely have value assuming he picks it up to somewhere between his first stint and second stint.

          • Anonymous

as much as i love Grady, it seems like he’s going to be perpetually on the DL and his .246 BA isn’t exactly lightin up the joint..  we have over a month till the deadline, let’s see how he does..  if some GM wants to take a flyer on him and give up some talent the Tribe front office is excited about, then i have no problem at all at trading Grady..  but i don’t consider trading Grady “selling off”, it’s called being a smart/shrewd GM and getting above market value for a diminishing asset..

          • Anonymous

Yeah, I’m not saying otherwise… Just saying he’s likely on the block if the swoon continues and part of that will be to get out from under the money. That may be shrewd too, but not necessarily simply in the pure baseball sense. That might be something you have to do because of the situation you are in because your owner demands positive cash flow, and is related to “selling off.”

I’m on record saying the tribe is doing a very good job of playing out the cash-strapped, small-market organizational strategy.  That doesn’t mean it wouldn’t be better to have the kind of owner that believes in dumping in cash to promote and protect the franchise value. From a perspective of winning, that’s a better SORT of owner than one looking to create cash flow from operations. There’s just much more flexibility and more options.

We have three owners. One is a competent version of the best sort (Gilbert). One is an incompetent version of the best sort (Lerner). One seems to be a competent version of the worse sort (Dolan). I think Dolan and Lerner are tied for second as sports owners in this town.

Do you know anything about the economics of baseball at all?  Who said the team trading for Choo, or Sizemore, or whomever has to pay the entire salary?

Sizemore’s contract is up next year, and if you don’t think that someone out there wouldn’t take a flyer and give up a prospect in return for the Indians paying half of his salary, then you’re clueless.

See, teams make moves all the time when they think they are close to making a run.  It just doesn’t happen in these parts.

And they would want to trade for some of these guys now when their value is at their lowest. It’s obvious that Choo is better than he’s playing right now, and that Sizemore is a force to be reckoned with when healthy.

If someone would trade for an aging Victor Martinez, they would definitely trade for Choo or Sizemore.

        • Anonymous

DO YOU KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT BASEBALL CONTRACTS??  why would we trade Choo this year??? we have him signed for 3 more years.

re: grady, if the deal is right, go ahead and move him..  but we have another month to moniter his progress..  but at $7.5m, he’s not that pricey, so maybe the Tribe will hang on to him..

          • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

Who told you that Choo is signed for 3 years?  He has a 1 year deal right now for about 4 million.

He’ll be eligible for arbitration again after this year.  Do your homework.

          • Anonymous

LOL, he is eligible for arbitration for the next 3 years..  DERP

          • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

Correct.  With his service time accumulated, he is eligible for arbitration EVERY YEAR until he qualifies for free agency, or he signs a multi year deal with the Indians.

            Do. Your. Homework.

HE IS NOT A FREE AGENT!!!  WE ARE IN THE DRIVER’S SEAT FOR NEXT THREE YEARS!   so why on earth would we trade him??????   his numbers this year will not grant him a contract higher than $4 million bucks, unless of course Carl is the arbitrator..

            Zing!

          • Believelander

2.5 more years, and the more time on a controlled player’s controlled time, the more he’s worth, generally speaking. Its all about finding the right buyer.

If things keep going badly until the deadline, Sizemore, Choo, Carmona, and yes, even Hafner are all shoppable for the right situation. Or Raffy who is sporting a 1.32 era so far this season.

Scoffing at Chris is a bit silly. Its baseball, and low budget teams should sell their grandma if theyre not going to the playoffs and the offer is hot.

That said, I vote we buy this year and roll the dice, but lean more on the ‘short term payroll alleviation’ than the ‘mortgage the farm’ theory.

          • Anonymous

scoffing at chris?  he was ripping on the Dolan’s and predicted that we would “sell off” the team.  my question to him was who would we sell off?

of course any player is available for the right situation..  but it would be one of the oddest moves in baseball history to trade a player of Choo’s calibur when they hold the rights to him for 3 more years..  but i guess that’s why you guys are MLB GM’s and I am not..  wait..

        • Anonymous

          “*when healthy”

when has he been healthy in the last 3 years??   i don’t see why the indians trade him this year since we have him signed next year as well..

but fine, to your original point about the dolans, WHO DO WE SELL OFF??  all you got is grady.. and that is questionable at best..

          • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

exactly dude, he is not a free agent until 2014.. so why on earth would we trade him this year???     we either sign him to another 1 year deal, or a long-term deal, or we go to arbitration, and no judge is going to pay him more than the $4million we gave him last year.

again, WHY WOULD WE TRADE HIM????  we are in the driver’s seat

          • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

There is some point where the expense isn’t worth the rate of return.  This season he is clearly not anywhere near being worth $4 million.  If he doesn’t do anything all year, he may be traded to a team who would then own his rights, for the simple fact that he’s not worth what he commands through arbitration here.

Someone else ( the Yankees for example ) may decide he is and offer to trade for him.

I’m done with this.  It’s beyond obvious that you thought he was under contract for 3 years, which is factually inaccurate, and now you’re just trolling.  Have fun.

          • Anonymous

um, no, i’ve always known that he has arbitration years til 2014, we’ve discussed this several times on this site, you obviously missed those discussions..  particularly when Uncle Carl was around..

bottom line, he is the property of the Indians for the next 2.5 years..  he is not an expensive asset and he would not be someone that the Indians could “sell off”.  let’s stick to the point here.  you said the indians were going to “sell off” the team, i asked who we would sell off.    and you could only give grady and choo as examples..  but with Choo, it makes absolutely ZERO sense to move him when we are in the driver’s seat with him, Choo has ZERO leverage..

          • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

If you want to pay a guy 4+ million per year for .231, 12 hrs and 55 RBI, we could just bring back Jason Michaels.   I don’t want to move him.  But if he keeps this up, I can’t see the Indians paying a guy that kind of jack for shit production. I’m not talking about leverage here, I’m talking about value at this point.

Fausto is another guy they could move.  His contract after this year consists entirely of club options til 2015.  If you take some pressure off the kid and make him a #2 or #3, then he might turn things around a bit.

          • Anonymous

yeah, he def is off to a real rough start, but i can’t see them giving up on the guy this quick, his track record is pretty impressive..   even at $4m next year, his upside is way higher than Jason Michaels ever could dream to have..

          • Anonymous

re: Fausto, not sure how he fits into the “sell off” category since he has been extremely inconsistent the past 3 seasons, and seems to be completely lost at the moment..  if someone wants to take him and our scouts like the guys we can get in return, i have no problem moving him..

    • Anonymous

“which at this point would completely run me off”
run you off?  i don’t recall that you were exactly running with the tribe before the season..  at any rate, it seems to me that a lot of fans naturally jumped on the wagon when we started winning, but now that they hit a little rough patch people are threatening to “run off”..

      • Vari

I’ll admit I’m a fair weather Tribe Fan.  When they win I might watch 4 regular season games a year.  Playoffs I watch them all because generallythey are more exciting otherwise baseball is about as much fun to watch as watching paint dry.

      • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

Whether they call someone up, or trade for someone, something has to be done.  The vets that were playing over their heads have made a market correction and are back to the norm, which isn’t going to win this team anything.

Supposedly this Columbus team has a roster full of guys who are near major league ready.  Let’s see one.

I will support this team when they are making sound baseball moves and are obviously trying to get better.  Pinning the hopes of the season on Orlando Cabrera, Jack Hannahan, Adam Everett, etc, will not fly far at all.

        • Anonymous

yeah, because the hopes of the season were on those guys.  DERP!

Alex White is likely done for the year.  Good call, Sensei.

          • Anonymous

yes, but we called him up, and we just called up Phelps..  hopefully chisenhall next..  but in the meantime, if Choo, Grady, Santana, Hafner, etc pick up the slack we would be in much better shape..  that’s who the Tribe front office is counting on to be successful this year, not hannahan and ocab..

          • Believelander

We called up Phelpa, whereas we saw White because of multiple rotation injuries and Gomez getting beat up a bit. Doz u4 hom3werks.

          • Smittypop2

Chisenhall has been icy, icy cold of late and I would guess he still might get called up, but his stats look pretty pedestrian at this point. Kipnis (offensively) looks the most ready to contribute. Nowhere to put him though.

i have no idea what dolan’s business plan is but i’d hope it’s:  break-even on annual income statement and hope for capital appreciation on the franchise value.  doesn’t seem unreasonable given cleveland market size and the ridiculous economics of MLB.

dolan may be making plenty of money — with whatever he does with his cablevision dough — but i don’t know whether he’s making anything on the tribe.  we’re still at the bottom in attendance and given the relative ticket pricing that [likely] means dead least in stadium revenue.  i can’t imagine the STO/WKYC contracts are within 70% of the NESNs, YESs, WGNs.  (in fact, hasn’t his STO creation turned out to be a cash drain?  thought i read that somewhere.)

so even with the team’s salary is $50MM, i have to think it’ll be a challenge to break-even.  i can’t kill the guy for wanting to break-even.

      • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

He’s not coming anywhere near breaking even.  With the revenue sharing ( however disproportionate it may seem), he’s doing just fine.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: He’s probably missing his budgeted  numbers, but he’s still making money.  If he wasn’t, I’m sure he’d be the first one bitching about it.

        • Anonymous

you might be right about the rev sharing.  here’s a link showing how the pirates are profitable because of it.

but the question is can he make money chasing the payrolls of NY, PHI, BOS, etc.  the corollary question is will the big money free agent turn into roy halliday or john lackey?  big risk playing that game.

          • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

RE: Chasing payrolls – Absolutely not.  But when they have drafted as poorly as ( it seems ) that they have,  They’ll never even sniff the kind of success that Tampa has.

Cleveland is definitely getting it now, they are spending money on top end draft talent now.  However, if they want to have a hope at hitting this window, then something has to give somewhere.

    • Anonymous

Chris, I don’t think they’re going to do anything that’s going to jeopardize their ability to contend next season. Not sure why you’d expect them to.

      • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

Why would calling up a kid who’s hot in triple A jeopardize anything?

        • Smittypop2

We don’t have anyone that is hot.

          • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

Au Contraire. Valbuena has been absolutely murdering the ball lately.  But I’m not sure his head is where it’s supposed to be yet.  Kipnis has been hitting well also.

          • Smittypop2

Vabuena is a bumlike back up infielder. He is pretty useless in both the short and longterm. I did state earlier that Kipnis is the most offensively ready, but they have nowhere to put him and his defense has been horrible this year.

          • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

The way Orlando Cabrera is starting to boot balls, I don’t know if it’s worse.  At least Valbuena / Kipnis have some upside to their hitting.

If Cabrera isn’t a nearly stellar defensive player, he isn’t really bringing anything to the table.

    Haven’t
    looked in a while……

    Has
there been an apology to Dan Gilbert yet?

    One
of the 4 best owners ever in Cleveland sports, and destined to be the
    best.

    1.
    Bill Veeck

    Won
the last Indian WS in 1948. Used to visit bars all through Cleveland
to talk baseball with the patrons. Brought the first black ballplayer
into the  American League. Had little money and could not keep
    the team.

    2.
    Paul Brown

    Legendary.
Had little money. Had to bring Art Modell in as a partner, and Modell
fired him. He started a team in Cincinnati and within 5 years they
    got to the Super Bowl.

    3.
    Richard and (primarily) Dick Jacobs.

    Took
an Indian organization that hadn’t even been in  a pennant race
for over 35 years and made it one of the best organizations in MLB.
Strictly businesspeople. Wouldn’t open up the budget to let Hart get
missing pieces for another trip to the WS and allowed him to trade
their best minor leagues prospects for left-handed set-up men,
back-up 2nd basemen and the like. Bought low, sold high — stuck the
buyer (the Dolan’s) with gobs of debt due to the inflated sales
price, an aging roster, and no farm system to speak of.

    4.
    Dan Gilbert.

    Hired
himself a top-tier NBA coach (Byron Scott after missing on Izzo and
Brian Shaw) and they are actually developing players after the “King”
left (actually, Nat Cole was the real King) and took his talents
south so he could choke on a bigger stage.  Took on over $10
million to dump another choker and bs-leader — Mo Williams — and
brought in a PG that would take on a leadership role and get the 1st
choice in the draft as well. (When last heard of Baron Davis was
working out daily and had lost quite a bit of weight…..but since
there probably won’t be a 2011-12 season (thanks to the king and his
jesters), we’ll miss part of the interlude to the Cavs next glory
    years.

    It’s
a race between the Cavs and Browns to see who gets the next elusive
Cleveland championship. But the Cavs will be in contention shortly,
and if Randy Lerner continues to keep his hands off Holmgren he can
become #5 on the list above.

    Good
things are happening now, and they will just continue to get better!

CT, I really like the Bill Veeck reference!
My dad still tells Bill Veeck stories.
His Larry Doby story is terrific.
He will also expound upon the antics of Max Patkin.
I could listen all day to stories about Satchel Paige.
The Eddie Gaedel story is great too.  Veeck also championed Gaedel’s amazing abilities in the war effort too, he did not just consider him a sideshow freak.
(I do not believe that Veeck actually told the sniper story, the concept and delivery make the tale seem amazingly apocryphal.)

      • Carl Tassoff

Bill Veecks son ran a minor league team in he late-90’s and had a “Lawyers Night”.

Did things like charge admission by the inning……

Thank you CT, I love it.
Frownie should get in on this idea.
Charging by the inning is great, we could also add some fun concepts with fan retainers, torte reform school and plea bargaining.

    Gentlemen…..

In all pro sports it’s about drafting and developing our own.

Signing the superstars to built rotisserie league-type teams gets you in contention and often to the playoffs, but it doesn’t guarantee a championship.

I was on here a year ago and explained how arbitration kills mid and small market teams.  The large markets set the salaries.

But the key remains DRAFTING AND DEVELOPING YOUR OWN. It kept the Twins going for years. It’s allowed the Rays to stay in the thick of the AL East race even though their star, Carl Crawford, went to the Red Sox — an AL East competitor.

The fella (Bud Grant and his staff) doing the drafting the past few years for the Indians has been great — shows how lost Shapiro and Antonetti have been and still are. But the organization still has to develop these guys, and we see Manny Acta and his staff (finally a staff that does it!) trying to instill fundamentals into players that have come through the farm system without any.

No, it’s not just that the playing field in MLB isn’t level. It’s still the people running your organization.

And to reiterate — the 2011-12 NBA season will not be played as the majority of NBA owners have no intention of continuing to allow the agents and players to run their league as MLB does. When you can’t keep your star players you cannot sell your fans on loyalty to he team…..but if you don’t develop your own, your star players are not enough.

Check it out:  LeSatan’s King’s (!!) Academy is right in my backyard.  I wonder what the itinerary looks like.

I’ll be disappointed if there are no tutorials on sticking your foot in your mouth and how to ignore your post-up game.

      Two things:

The Kings Academy is back?  You mean this isn’t the first time?

      and

Congrats to the Miami Heat on the 2011 Finals.  Are your kidding me?

        Thanks

I forgot about another session that looked interesting – “rebranding yourself as the antichrist and other marketing strategies for the 21st century”.

I know that he’s held one here at least for one year prior. I moved here right after the decision and wanted to go down and protest in front a bunch of 8 year olds, but my parole officer showed me the value in taking a pass on the idea. Also, UCSD might have one of the sickest campuses anywhere – it’s right on the Pacific and a lot of the dorms have ocean views. Also, lots of Asians. If I were to hold a skills camp on eating, that would be the place.

I’ve spent a fair amount of time in LA down to SD up to wine country.  Other than having to deal with traffic, I’m a big fan of the region.

          • http://hardawayhatespittsburgh.blogspot.com PittsburghisforManLovers

Absolutely no complaints except that I miss God’s Country. It didn’t take me long to see why no one gives a crap about sports around here (not a good thing).

          • Anonymous

Who has time for sports when you have to worry about “who is wearing what” to the oscars this year?  Entertainment is king.  So much so, that no matter how hard they try, the (E)ntertainment (S)ports and (P)rogramming (N)etwork can’t be heard above the noise.  Although, they have a pretty amazing presence at Disney.  I just hope you don’t lose your Chargers to that cultural wasteland to the north.

Oscars? Nah man, in Orange County it’s about beach bunnies.

            PML,  “God’s Country”??
Israel?  Mecca to Medina?  Nepal?  India?  The Amazon Basin?  Norway?
            Greece?
There are a lot of gods out there, please be more specific.
I think god dropped a Coke bottle in the Kalahari once, so the Bushmen claim to have god there too.

So where’s Joyner or Kanicki at?  I need to know exactly wtf “Cue the Duckboats” means.  Somehow I’m sure it’s completely idiotic in standard Boston fashion.

    • Anonymous

duckboats are amphibious vehicles that are used to give boston tours.  they’ll ride you around beacon hill and back bay and then splash into the charles for a nice view of the esplanade and skyline.  pats/sox used them for their parades.

      great year for the bruins.

      • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

Yeah, good thing that 3 year parade “drought” is over.  How would Boston have survived?
