Browns give Tony Pashos the Ron Paul treatment

by Cleveland Frowns on March 13, 2012

The Browns recently informed outspoken libertarian and Ron Paul supporter Tony Pashos that he’ll be released by the team, and Pashos is “really upset” about it.

According to Pashos’s agent Rick Smith, the former Browns right tackle played all of last season with a ruptured tendon in his left foot that required surgery that will take 9-10 months to recover from. Pashos claims that he “gutted through” the injury because he knew the Browns “lacked depth on the offensive line, especially at right tackle,” and “wanted to help the team,” even though he knew that by doing so, he wouldn’t have been able to play again until late in the 2012 season at the earliest. Moreover, to pull this off, he had to take “an enormous amount” of painkillers, which caused him at least three ulcers. “You can see that he missed the final regular season game,” Smith said, “because he was in the hospital with the ulcers.”

“When Tony called the Browns, they told him he was a warrior,” Smith added. “But he’s not a warrior. He’s somebody’s son, somebody’s husband, somebody’s father. He’s a guy trying to support his family.”

Finally, Smith said that “Tony feels like he had the team’s back last season,” and “wishes the team had his back now. … Now he’s off on his own.”

Uh, what do you think this is, Tony? The Red Cross?

Pashos couldn’t possibly have meant to suggest that the Browns should risk running a deficit to set up an infirmary for offensive linemen with bad feet.

Tony knows better than anyone that it’s the Browns who get to decide what and how to spend the wealth that they earned have.

Hard to believe he’d complain about the Browns organization exercising its personal rights here. It’s probably just the meds talking. Hope the big multi-millionaire gets back on his feet soon.

Liberty, freedom, happiness=fun!

Not to mention the fact that Pashos ended up making $7.6 million ($6.6 salary + $1 million CBA-bartered injury protection) out of the three-year $10 million contract he signed.

Didn’t they “have his back” when they kept him around after only playing in 6 games his first year?

I love the fact that he played through it and didn’t use the injury as an excuse. Just don’t pretend like he didn’t get anything out of it.

If he stops playing at the end of pre-season, opts for surgery and takes an injury settlement of some kind from the team, he’d probably have been on his own then too and with less money in his pocket to rehab. I can’t imagine the Browns would have opted for the PUP list for a guy who only played 6 games the year before and was going to miss the entire 2011 season.

Of course, I wish Tony well, but I’m just a bit irritated by his agent’s act. Also kudos to Bull and Fox for not letting the agent off the hook on their show yesterday. They were tough and fair. Nice to hear.

    • Believelander

Pretty much agree to this. Also, he supports Ron Paul, so

Anyway, tell Scott for me that we need to go sign Lawrence Vickers since he was responsible for Arian Foster’s great season.

  • Anonymous

on the surface it is a smart business decision by the organization, at its heart it was sorely needed because this guys performance on the field was only trumped by his injuries keeping him off it. habitual rehabber.

  • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

I don’t see what Pashos is so upset about. He’s now free to exercise his freedom to freely select any doctor out there, freely of course, and he’s not forced to see the Socialist Browns team doctors. Everyone knows that OrangeandBrownCare kills jobs and infringes on freedoms and liberties and GOD DAMMIT BROWNS STAY OUT OF MY HEALTHCARE.

I heard Rick Smith call in to Bull and Fox to try and defend Pashos and crucify the Browns for cutting him, but Fox said it perfectly: “There’s no way I’m playing at only 40%, I didn’t want to be on tape getting torched for 31 other teams to see”.

    • acto

      Chris M,
To quote my favorite movie, “you know I love you”.

    • Anonymous

      >>>Fox said it perfectly: “There’s no way I’m playing at only 40%>>>

You don’t understand the libertarian mind, Chris. Tony had to play, because even 40% of a productive, galt-type, job-creator-person is just worlds better than the next man up, who probably would be thinking about shoes and cars instead of liberty.

      • rUnk

Or he simply needed the cash to survive, so he showed up hurt. Sad thing is his “Work Ethic” hurt us last year and nearly killed our QB. Which incites the “Stockholm” fans to pick up pitch forks and demand RG3 or Flynn, or…
Pashos could have gotten his medical treatment lastyear and we could have found a resonable solution last year out of neccessity, rather than have him show us what a high tolorence to pain killers he has.

  • Anonymous

Frowns can hate what a guy does to the Browns via his post at the Plain Dealer, but be upset that the guy was put out of work. Pashos can support a system that he knows can/did hurt him, but he can’t be upset when it happens? Double standard. Misrepresentation of Libertarianism. Not surprising to find such things on this blog.

    • Anonymous

I don’t see what my being glad someone was removed from one job while also hoping he could get a job that he’s better suited for has anything to do with this post.

Anyway, nobody’s saying Pashos can’t be upset about anything.

When that chump is out of the NFL and poor he may re-think his support of the robber baron/carpet bagger Ron Paul.
The Browns should cut him and sesquestrate that cancer out of their locker room.

The most important part of his platform is to re-install slavery for the rich while subjugating the middle and lower SES public as slaves.

    • Anonymous

Browns already did cut him.. cha-ching cha-ching, $2m more in the coffers! with the $1.6 from Dangerous Dan’s chicanery, we’re up to $21.1m in cap space.. KillaKam!

Poor Pashos – I should probably vote for another tax cut so he can create some of those jobs I hear the wealthy are always creating. I mean, it seems like he could use a PR rep, but probably can’t afford it due to the economy and gas prices and all, you know?

    • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

Yep. Because as we all know, the way to fix the economy is to give more money to the people that already own everything.

trickle-down – if it was good enough for hoover, it’s good enough for us, right?

        • https://twitter.com/jimkanicki jimkanicki

saw a fascinating American Experience about hoover and the 1921 russian famine. long story short, hoover is credited as the key person responsible for saving about 16,000,000 from starvation.

          history is fun.

srsly, i didnt know it before, but hoover’s humanitarian record was fantastic. really ironic his legacy is so different.

          • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

I can’t believe that people put up with giving out hand outs like that. Like, those Russian people should just get a job, or something.

Class warfare, and stuff like that.

          • Anonymous

Who cares about humanitarianism. Did he make the Rich Richer?

          • https://twitter.com/jimkanicki jimkanicki

that he spearheaded aid to suffering russians without trying to lever bolshevik government .. simply doing good by providing food AND providing seed to avoid a famine in the next year… that’s goodness. that hoover had a laudable humanitarian record is just a fact; one i found interesting and chose to share.

as for the depression, no one got rich. (well except joe kennedy. but as long as you like the politics, that’s ok, right?)

i cant get busy with this today.

          • acto

            jk,
I thought that Prohibition helped make Joe Kennedy rich.
How did the depression come into play?

          • https://twitter.com/jimkanicki jimkanicki

he famously shorted the market when he got a stock tip from a shoeshine boy. said that’s when he knew it was time to get out. (or urban legend.. je ne sais pas.)

          • Anonymous

Kanicki, dont ever get busy with this around here.

          • Anonymous

There’s nothing wrong with hoover that a swift kick from a Keynesian horse wouldn’t fix. He’s an apropos figure for the times, given all the Republicans who have decided that austerity is a great fix for a recession.

          • Anonymous

it’s true – history *is* fun and yes, hoover had almost achieved hero status for his acts of public service. he was a businessman who – after becoming hugely successful running a mining business (a many multi-millionare), stepped down from running the company and took on a number of prominent public service roles which, by all accounts, he performed admirably (so admirably that his stellar record helped get him elected president).

but it’s also true that is depression-era economic policies were disasatrous.

americans are completely self-interested. i’d say it’s symptamatic of our condition that we tend to remember hoover for his economic policies at home rather than his successes helping those abroad.

          • Anonymous

Yup yup, I’ve always had him and Jimmy Carter as sharing the lousy president/great humanitarian tag. Most lousy presidents can’t even get the great humanitarian rep, so Hoover’s actually pretty alright in my book. The only thing he really did wrong was be unable to even conceive of alternative solutions for the huge crisis he faced, such that by the time he did break down and start trying some socialist spending stuff, it was half-hearted and far too late to save his reputation.

          • Anonymous

carter is my #hero. for real. for what he’s doing now.

the fact that he did it post his disastrous presidency (instead of pre, which is the way hoover did it) is all the more impressive.

this guy isn’t a “real” libertarian. He’s one of these tea party pickups that have spawned over the past few years who “thinks” he’s libertarian but doesn’t truly understand what real capitalism is…something the U.S has “NEVER EVER” been in it’s entire history.

Ron Paul though is a true libertarian, and to whomever called him a robber baron doesn’t understand how the robber barons jobbed the system. The robber barons would have had a much tougher time had there been no strongman, ie the govt, to buy off and set the table in the market for them. We have never been a truly free market.

    • Anonymous

      >>>We have never been a truly free market. >>>

While technically true I’m sure, it also should be noted that there never has been a “truly free market” and there never will be one.

      • Alexb

there’s never been a pure socialist or pure capitalist society….it’s always been a continuum. Not acknowledging that is criminally disingenuine because the powers that be have framed this world as a right v left, socialist vs capitalist paradigm. And we’re all stupid sheep for falling for it

Just threaten to “go galt” Tony! The world can’t revolve without genious job-creators like you.

With our draft ammo, I think the idea is take value in FA (corners should be cheap, OL not bad) and then that will dictate draft. I can see them trading out of 4, maybe with the Cowboys who go for Claiborn.

        • Anonymous

Yeah, it makes sense. Heckert’s not going to get into any bidding wars, so any FA with a name is not going to be here next season. It’s another year of building focused on the draft.

I think moving out of 4 wouldn’t be terrible – I’m not in love with anyone other than Kalil, and I bet he goes to the Vikings. We just have so many holes that we have to fill through the draft AND free agency.

I don’t even care about Lombardi-worthy prospects at this point, I just want us to be competitive in our own division.

Garcon is marquis? I disagree. Just because The Offseason Champs® pay him like he’s top flight doesn’t make it so. I have a feeling his numbers might take a hit without Reggie Wayne drawing all of the attention off of him.

My favorite part is how The Offseason Champs® can’t afford any #1 receivers with their new cap situation, so they just went ahead and paid a #2 guy #1 money.

Garcon would’ve been a marquee signing for the Browns. A #2 receiver on another team would still be #1 for us. But why bother going after anyone with any talent at all when we can vulture the corpse of free agency after all the good players are gone? It’s worked wonders.
