Shurmurball Week 3 “Must Win” Open Thread

by Cleveland Frowns on September 23, 2012

The Bills haven’t won a road game in over a year. The Browns have lost eight in a row going back to last season. Pat’s calling it a “must win” for the Browns. Something’s got to give today at Browns Stadium.

The Week 3 picks are here, the tailgate will be in the Muni Lot, and the rest is your Shurmurball Week 3 open thread. We’ll post exact coordinates of the tailgate in the comments here as soon as we’re parked. Happy Sunday, everyone.

  • actovegin1armstrong

So sorry to miss The Famous Frownie Tailhook Party.
    I mean tailgate party.
Please remember that capsaicin keeps you warm, so eat more chili and alcohol kills germs, so drink until you are so dimwitted that you will argue with anyone that Pat Shurmur is the next Vince Lombardi.
    Go Browns!

    • ClevelandFrowns

We’re set up in Muni Lot about as far from Stadium as you can get, on the south side of the northernmost aisle, look for red pickup truck as pictured. http://via.me/-5daskma

    • ClevelandFrowns

RV just pulled up next to us. Auspisscious. http://via.me/-5db5snk

      • Wiseoldredbeard

Sorry to miss your jam, dude.

off topic, sad to see mark dantonio act like a dick after winning against EMU yesterday. ive been a dantonio fan historically, but there’s no excuse for being deliberately and publicly petulant and rude. ‘he’s competitor’ doesnt fly. ‘he’s an asshole’ is more on target.

what ever happened to respect for the title ‘coach?’ he’s a ‘coach.’ in addition to and more important than winning football games: he’s supposed to set an example and to teach men life lessons. hard to think he can help men grow when he himself responds to a disappointment with the demeanor of a 14 year old.

    • bupalos

I agree with Dantonio that after about the 5th one the press questions were stupid. Not because they were stupid in and of themselves, but because the people asking them should have been able to recognize what a toddler having a tantrum looks like. My question would have been: “Coach, it looked like you did such a good job coaching today (despite how bad your players betrayed you by dropping balls) that you deserve to be able to just walk away and not have to do any other part of your job today. Do you agree with that?”

  • bupalos

Botched this up pretty bad. Won’t be able to go in to the stadium, probably won’t get down there at all, may not get to watch most of the game.
    Surmurball at its finest.

    • actovegin1armstrong

Cheer up Bupa, perhaps someone will rush down to the jail and bail you out in time.

      • bupalos

Wifey says she won’t do that anymore. She’s on the 2-strikes-and-you’re-out schedule.

    • nj0

Important part is that you battled and challenged.

      • bupalos

If you don’t flash, it don’t mean a thing.

  • CLEVTA

For my cheddar friends, in case you were interested in laying down some real cheese on some of these games today, here’s who I am taking with my personal picks. In case you cared:

Minny +7.5- See my cheddar post. No chance you can get 7.5, probably 6 right now. If you can get 6.5 and buy the hook at 7 I’d do it. Perfect let down spot for SF here.

Jacksonville +3 v Indy- Waaayyy too many people love Indy here. Yes Jax looked bad last week but look who they played. Houston is as good as it gets and makes many teams look bad. On the bright side the Jax defense only allowed 4.95 yds/play defensively. It was their meager offense that couldn’t do anything. But remember in week 1 on the road in Minny, Gabbert was 23/39 for 260 yds, 2 tds, 0 ints. He’s capable of similar #s vs a weak Indy defense. Also MJD owns the colts so expect a good ground game as well. At worst you’ll push here.

Oakland +4 v Pitt- Pitt often struggles going out west. They don’t have Harrison or Polamalu. Yes Oak looked bad last week but consider they played a tough opener late Monday night the week before then had to fly all the way out East and play on a really short week at 1 pm in the 90 degree heat of Miami. I dont think they are as bad as they showed. Pitt on the road in their last 9 games- L by 12, L 28, W 3, L 7, W 12, W 7, W 4, L 17, W 4. That’s 5-4 with 3 W’s by 4 or less.

Chi -7 v STL- Perfect example of the public/media overrexagerating to a good team looking poor last week (Chi v GB) and an average team looking good (STL v Wash). Remember STL barely beat a Wash team that lost 2 of its best defenders early in that game and Wash did not have their best WR in Garcon. Yes they are improved but they are not good enough to cover the number here. Cutler goes off (in a good way) and lays the hammer on that weak defense. This is a dd victory for Chi.

Zona +4 v Philly- Arizona’s defense is legit. Philly is without their Tackle Dunlap and Maclin. They’ll keep this tight and have a shot to win if Vick turns it over again.

    Good luck!

    • ClevelandFrowns

Like the Chicago play a lot. Adding it to my slate.

    • ClevelandFrowns

Also anybody does care. Anybody appreciates you posting your picks very much.

    • ClevelandFrowns

Will take Steelers +4 over Raiders as well.

    • Petefranklin

      WOW! Tail material!

    • ClevelandFrowns

      Excellent. Hope you parlayed those.

  • bupalos

This one should be the Shurmur killer. Way to go Pat.

    • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

This game is once again hot garbage. A big hug to the first person who politely asks Shurmur to fire himself.

      • bupalos

Shurmur is indeed awful. I want to say Weeden is also awful, but I recognize that where he overthrew everyone in G1, he’s under-throwing everyone here. Maybe he frames it up sometime soon.

        • Believelander

Don’t watch the rest later. Do. Not. F***ing. Do. It.

          • bupalos

I’m back. I have to do it. I have to. Sorry, it’s a disease with me.

Going to assume oline went back to caving in and Weeden freaked?

          • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

            Spoiler alert: hot garbage

      • bupalos

        >>>Spoiler alert:>>>

There was no way to spoil that.

    • jimkanicki

just look up the first qtr scoring under shurmur. oh wait, I did– it’s now ~30 to ~100. every em effing week they are not ready to play coming out of the locker room.

      • bupalos

        Coaches CAN matter. Ours does.

  • AlvaroEspinoza10

    BW3!!!

    • bupalos

Hold off on that. For now, it’s “Heez-got-hiz-man-OHHH-itz-incomplete”

  • nj0

    Greg Little can tackle.

    • humboldt

      The human blot

  • Lawrence_kansas

some nice play action calls with the Browns down two scores.

    • bupalos

gotta freeze those safeties, don’t you know.

  • Kamov

I always peg the Browns for 4-5 wins, but that’s based on the assumption they’ll beat a team like this (or Cinci) occasionally. The way Buffalo just kind of meandered to the victory, never being really pressured, even after losing Spiller, was a let down. Guess Sherlock Holmgren’s gonna have to hang on to all those playoff tix he’s been saving up.

    • actovegin1armstrong

      “Sherlock Holmgren’s”
      Bravo Kamov!

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/6MZJCM7WOXAJ7JXRCDP4Z6ZYHA Michael

WOW Romeo Crennel has a win…. ROMEO!!!!!!! and we are 0-3… what a joke!

    • Kamov

Come on now, Romeo did have that fun 10-6 season when Derek Anderson forgot he was an inaccurate passer for the first half of the season and Joe Jurevicius was healthy.

  • GrandRapidsRustlers

Early thoughts from one of the final games of the Shurmur dynasty.

(How fun is Thursday night going to be?)

    - If Spiller stays upright or an NFL team just decides to run the ball on a consistent basis vs the team someone will hang 50 on them.

    - Weeden put it up 43 times. He remains the least of the problems this team has.

    - The offensive line was terrible.

    - Richardson carried it 12 times. Where were the delays and the draw plays in an effort to get him even a little bit of space? Ask Pat?

    - This might be the worst group of hands on a set of wideouts in NFL history. It’s time to remove Cribbs from special teams and just make him a WR. He has lost a few steps but the hands work.

    - What did Jordan Norwood do?

    - The scab refs were comical this week. Enough is enough. Don’t buy into the nonsense of the NFLPA giving a rats ass though…if they really cared they would just stay in the locker room tonight until about 9PM and it would be solved.

    - Off to the liquor store…going to need a lot for Thursday night.

    • Believelander

Bit late, but if you’re still at the liqour store or you head back tomorrow for reinforcements, can you grab me some fifths of Mad Dog 20/20? Strawberry banana (officially known as ‘Banana Red’) is the best, tasting the least like lethal poison. After that, I’m a big fan of Blue Raspberry, and then either Key Lime Pie, Electric Melon, or Dragon Fruit, whichever is available and not necessarily in that order. I like being surprised when I’m hopefully drinking myself into a stupor during Thursday Night Football.

F*** you roommates for getting a provider that carries NFL Network. Now I have to watch this shiz when I’d be better off throwing darts at myself.

    • http://twitter.com/JRichTCF Jeff Rich

Liked mostly for “Shurmur Dynasty”…it’s going to catch on. I can only hope when he sits down with Mary Kay in the next decade or so, to scratch out his autobiography, that he will call it that. It has a better ring to it than “4-28, Thanks Uncle Mike”

      • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

MKC will have to channel her best Baghdad Bob for that one.

      • ClevelandFrowns

I think you know that “4-20, Thanks Uncle Mike” is actually the perfect title for his autobiography.

  • bupalos

    >>>(How fun is Thursday night going to be?)>>>

    OMG I forgot about that!!

    >>>- If Spiller stays upright or an NFL team just decides to run the ball on a consistent basis vs the team someone will hang 50 on them.

This myth of the horrible run d is simply wrong. The secondary is much more the problem.

    >>>- Weeden put it up 43 times. He remains the least of the problems this team has.

Can’t disagree the way you phrased it, but he was bad. This is another game where Colt would probably have done better than he did. That said, it’s his 3rd NFL game and I was impressed that he took sacks without freaking totally.

    >>>- The offensive line was terrible.

It was quite bad. I also happen to think the Buffalo line is quite good.

    >>>- Richardson carried it 12 times. Where were the delays and the draw plays in an effort to get him even a little bit of space? Ask Pat?>>>

    Is he still the coach?

    >>>- The scab refs were comical this week. Enough is enough. Don’t buy into the nonsense of the NFLPA giving a rats ass though…if they really cared they would just stay in the locker room tonight until about 9PM and it would be solved.>>>

No one seems to care. I’m glad I had no expectations this year, because these refs would drive you absolutely nuts if it mattered.

    >>>- Off to the liquor store…going to need a lot for Thursday night.

No Sunday sales of hard alcohol in Ohio. One of the great ironies of life in these United States.

Actually I think it will be better because Shurmur has less time to prepare.

    • actovegin1armstrong

“No Sunday sales of hard alcohol in Ohio. One of the great ironies of life in these United States.”
      Bupa,
I have been fighting that fight since I was nine years old.
Why should the mandates of someone else’s imaginary friend keep me from doing as I wish in this allegedly free country?
From alcohol sales, to two words added to Pledge of Allegiance in 1957.
This country was founded on the concept of freedom, but yet…..

I am sorry, I will climb down off of the “soap box”. The Browns lost again and it sucks.

    • CleveLandThatILove

      Is the moonshine gone already?

      • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

You cut to the core of me CTILol

    • GrandRapidsRustlers

Is he still the coach made me laugh.

I do find it funny that as Browns fans we can argue about whether the pass or the run defense is the problem.

Like it matters. Remember to pick something off the top shelf for Thursday and get ready for Interim Coach Childress.

      • ClevelandFrowns

        BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR.

      • actovegin1armstrong

“pick something off the top shelf for Thursday”
        Damn rich kids.
Thursday night I shall sit outside on the sidewalk of my local TV store with a cheap bag of Franzia hanging there hooked up on an I V.

    • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

We are gonna get murderized Thursday. Belicheck went for a TD with 7 seconds left in the half at the 6(?) instead of a FG. Any scenario on earf Shurmie would do the same thing? Of course I know the answer to that.

      • actovegin1armstrong

“We are gonna get murderized Thursday.”
PML, is that a Ray Lewis joke?

        • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

I would never joke about Stabbey McKnifey in such a manner.

  • Atdietz80

I hope Jim Brown does find a new role with the organization…being the one to send Mike Holmgren packing. It’s hard to drum Pat Shurmur over the head week after week, because he really is not underachieving. He was just never cut out to be a head coach in the first place. Holmgren is making crazy money to be that serious, credible leader. It’s more like “seriously, you’re a credible leader?” Credible leaders don’t hire rookie head coaches to coach rookie players and expect a better than 6-10 season. Lerner bribed him to come here and it shows. At least Joe Banner will be coming here willingly. And with his ownership piece, it’s in his best interest to be successful. Carmen Policy had a similar arrangement, but he was never a football guy. Banner presided over a successful Eagles build. In that scenario, the coach picked the players. I wonder if that is the route he takes this time. The sale has not even gone through yet, so all of this is very premature. We’ll see. Stay tuned. Of course we all will, because we sat through this week’s train wreck for 4 quarters.

    • Petefranklin

Speak for yourself. I stopped watching the paint dry after my son won a Browns backers license frame at halftime. And we were late arriving also because our liquor stores are indeed open on Fundays.

  • Bryan

Call me crazy. But I like Weeden. Dude is in his 3rd game and is learning each week. He was patient all day and made good reads until the very end when he forced two stupid throws. The big short-coming today was the misses on the two long throws (Benjamin and Massaquoi). But he clearly can make that throw and eventually will. What was encouraging is how easy he can make the basic throws look, and how quickly has he improved on some mistakes he made in week 1.

Again, I am NOT saying he is great right now, but when I watch him I can at least picture him becoming very good, possibly as early as the second half of the season. McCoy, Anderson, Quinn, etc., I never felt that way about. They were never going to be the answer. So far, I still think Weeden good be a legit QB for 6-7 years. Of course, I will re-evaluate each week.

    • Believelander

We are averaging 15 2/3 offensive ppg right now, which is like 3 ppg more than last season’s offensive scoring. We are also scoring more points via touchdowns than field goals, and more offensive touch downs than defensive. #progress #flashes #seeingthings

      • Bryan

Agreed. As I said, he is NOT good enough right now – the dude is a rookie with 3 games under his belt. But I do actually see some promise in him, especially relative to the conveyor belt of mediocre QBs we have attempted to develop since ’99.

        • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

Don’t you talk about Chuck Frye that way. Dawg Pound Mike changed up his whole shtick to Charlie’s Fries for that man. How dare you????

      • actovegin1armstrong

I will not dispute your facts, but the Browns have also accrued those stats playing three terrible teams.

  • Wiseoldredbeard

Fuck me that was brutal. What a bunch of junk. Wiseoldredbeard does not approve. Jimmy Haslam needs to fire Shurmur the day he takes over. The bills fans owning the stadium and cheering as the fourth quarter wound down made me feel a sadness that I will not recover from for several days. Fuckkk.

  • maxfnmloans

    308 days and counting

  • Believelander

    Some thoughts from this Sunday:

    1) It’s been nearly a month now since the Month of Shame, great moment in Indians history, buried the Tribe’s season hopes, and my Mad Dog 20/20 hangover started to subside. Their season is set to wrap up in 10 days, and the Browns’ season is already over.

    2) I’m an Indians fan first because I can count on them for six to ten Sunday wins every season. They have 9 Sunday wins this season with an opportunity for one more.

    3) “They” will never be used to refer to the Browns.

    4) Pat Shurmur: I don’t hate you because you took a job that was the opportunity of a lifetime for you, even though you’re out of the debt. Go f*** yourself anyway. But I mean that nicely.

    5) Mike Holmgren, Randolph David Lerner, also Alfred Lerner: go f*** yourselves and each other. Violently. I don’t mean that nicely.

    5) No seriously, Mike Holmgren, go f*** yourself. And Art Modell too.

    5) F*** the Jets. All you had to do this season was beat the Steelers, and you FAILED.

    6) Jimmy Haslam III, I like that you’re a III. The sad part is that we could have had RG3 and JH3. But we don’t.

    7) Despite the fact that we don’t have RG3, Brandon Weeden looks like he has the potential to be good and learn quickly. This is good because that means that after Mike Holmgren is canned and hopefully shot (very important you don’t say shot and canned, though that could feed a lot of hungry children, cannibalism is BAD), and Pat Shurmur is just canned, we can maybe get a good coach in here and he can inherit a good quarterback.

    8) Wouldn’t mind keeping Tom Heckert when they fire Holmgren. I say when, not if, because Holmgren’s regime, when they knew they had to make a good first impression on the new regime coming in, promptly managed to sh*t the bed and go 0-3. Holmgren/Shurmur should have learned something from Eric Mangini and engineered an exciting win streak to make themselves less fire-able. But instead they went 0-3. Anyway, Tom Heckert has brought in some good talent and while I’m not going to cry if the new organization looks for a new GM, I’d prefer to keep him because

    9) of the same reason I feel we need to stick with a West Coast system and 4-3 base for now, and bring in coaches who are comfortable with this. The West Coast system, of course, should be updated to the 21st century, possibly even a 2nd decade 21st century vintage.

    5) Mike Holmgren should be shoved off a bridge. Maybe just a very small one, like a bridge over a creek that’s only 3′ high, so he’s in a better, prone-er position to be shot. Don’t want that spry guy to dodge any bullets.

    10) I don’t miss Brad McCoy. Despite this, Colt McCoy should start playing wide receiver and/or tight end as well as free safety. He can’t be worse than Usama Young/Eric Hagg/Whoeverthef***. Also, he should probably start a pro wrestling career. I would watch that. Colt McCoy is highly watchable, and I want him making or breaking tackles for my team. Maybe fullback?

    11) This division is still very winnable, if cruise missiles hit Joe Flacco, Ben Roethlisberger, and whoever is making the Cincinnati Bengals win football games (BenJarvus Green-Ellis?) and not Colt McCoy.

    12) KevJohn SkeltKolb has as many wins as we have losses. F*** you Holmgren. But most of all, f*** me. I need a new bottle of Mad Dog 20/20 strawberry banana bum wine.

    13) It’s actually called bum wine, which is neat. I think I’ll send Holmgren a bottle for Christmas.

    • Believelander

I just found out that Colt McCoy was actually born in New Mexico. I don’t even know what to think anymore.

      • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

I was in New Mexico last week – lots of barren wasteland and green chiles and not much else. Seriously, it was like Western PA with a lot of Mexicanos – which is undoubtedly a much better alternative to the actual Western PA. Where was I going with this? Oh yeah – Shurmie should fire himself.

    • Bryan

I agree on point 7). Weeden is showing an ability to adjust and learn.

Shurmur is just not a head coach. Haslem will fire him mid-season and install Jauron as interim.

      • Believelander

It’s odd that I bear Pat Shurmur no ill will. I feel like I should have wroth, which is actually the wrong tense of wrath for that sentence, but sounds more like something that makes you shoot lightning out of your eyes. But I really don’t hate Pat Shurmur, I just resent that we have him instead of Eric Mangini, who may not have been a great head coach, but he was competent and showed a propensity for becoming better.

You can’t really deny point 11) either, because the division is very winnable if Kim Jong-Il is a Browns fan. Glad to see someone else is holding down the late shift. I’m sorting my paperwork so I can go make job tomorrow and wishing I was an alcoholic and didn’t just joke about it.

        • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

How’s this reply for the late shift? Call of Duty with Stone IPA to make the pain go away. Can someone please remind me why I still give a stinky shit about this team? I have enough stress in my life as it is. On the bright side Satan did lose and my yinzer in-laws will be flying in from hell tomorrow so I can at least rub it in their faces that Rapey McFeely had the game of his life and he still lost to Cleveland, West Coast Division.

          • actovegin1armstrong

            PML,
While I too love Stone IPA, Dogfish Head now has a 120 minute IPA that is amazing.
If it is not available in your country to the west, please let me know and I will send you some.

          • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

Very generous of you and thanks for the offer – we do have it out this way.  I will definitely check it out as my need for more beer will undoubtedly grow as this season goes on and I need something to shake up the suck.

          • actovegin1armstrong

            PML,
Please do not “shake up the suck”, it is $12.00 a bottle, (well worth it), so you do not want to have any foaming on the floor.

          • Beeej

Stone Russian Imperial Stout. One bottle costs as much as a six pack, but it also has the equivalent amount of alcohol. Makes Sundays less memorable…and that’s a good thing.

            Acto,

Is the 120 IPA that good? I see it at the store all the time, but haven’t been impressed by other Dogfish varieties.

Ideas to keep you from watching Thursday’s Dumpster Fire:
          1. Wash your hair.
          2. Rearrange your sock drawer.
          3. Make Halloween costumes for your cats.
          4. Write and direct a one woman play.
          5. Have family game night.
          6. Mow the lawn.
          7. Paint the house.
          8. Paint the fence.
          9. Wax on.
          10. Was off.
          11. “Fall asleep.” “Really the game was on? Oh, man. I totally forgot. Yea, well I’ve been really tired…Yea, busy at work. Jeez. I can’t believe I missed it. I can’t believe I slept through the game. Oh, man. I totally did not miss it on purpose. I am sooooo bummeed.”

Liked for “paint house, paint fence, wax on, wax off.” You’re giving PML a hard run for “most Asian” in these parts.

          • Beeej

I do consider myself half-Asian (my better half).

Brand me as a racist right now, but Biki leads the “Most Asian” category with his gambling addiction.

First hand knowledge kids, my best friend’s family and his wife’s as well show up at his house every Friday evening and proceed to gamble and argue until Sunday afternoon.

If you are a caucazoid like me, the only recourse is to sidle in delicately at a point when the noise dies down, (they are starting a new game), say hello, hug appropriately, then sneak away.
Gambling with one’s relatives is very serious business.

Or you could just watch. If you start to feel angsty, just think of all the Mangini haters bloviating meaninglessly and bleating triumphantly in the wake of his firing. Then think of them watching Shitticane Pat. Then slowly, cruelly smile and go to bed free of worry that night.

You did the right thing CLTIL,
I listened to the game on the radio while hand picking/dredging the stinking muck out of the pond in my back yard.

The game stunk more than Koi and Catfish Crap.

Made it down to the stadium yesterday for the first time in a long time. Took the wife as well. Couple random thoughts:

    - The freezing rain for the first half really added to the experience. I had a nice zen moment contemplating how I got where I am in life and what I must do to become a better person. Thanks to the Brownies and fans for keeping the crowd noise down to really process things.
    - Felt like there were about as many Bills fans as Browns fans
    - The Muni lot crowd is one of the great achievements of humanity. If aliens descended upon us I’d like to take them there first to study our race. I think they’d be impressed with our ingenuity and creativity, despite lacking equivalent technology.
    - Some buyers remorse – at halftime I chose the burger basket combo for $9 after really wanting to get the Polish Boy ($8.50). Couldn’t justify the cost for what is really just a very nice hotdog that didn’t come with fries. I immediately regretted this once I got to the condiment station a scoped the worst burger I’ve ever seen.

      “The natives are revolting”.

“Is this the first time you have seen them? We have known that for years.”

    *****Attention Tailgaters****
Does anyone have pics to post of Frownie doing his Master Yogi moves, or even some intricate Larsen Exercises?
How about telling us who won the Chili Cookoff?
If I make one of these Cookoffs, just give me last place and do not eat, I love my chili, but I put in a mix of Ecuadorian Lemon Peppers and Jamaican Habeneros that I lovingly cultivate with a generous helping of wild Chile Pequin that thrive on a freeway esplanade near my house.
My concoction tastes wonderful, but it is like putting molten lead in your belly for a few hours. You shall sweat no matter how cold it is.

Are tailgate pics allowed, or is that too personal for The Online?

Cuuuuugs won the chili cookoff in a landslide. A good time was had by all. Will post some photos one of these days soon.
