Could Mike Lombardi really be a serious candidate for a front office position with the Browns?

by Cleveland Frowns on October 31, 2012

The legend Tony Grossi says, “Great Caesar’s Ghost, no!” in an aggressive column at ESPNCleveland.com in which he addresses the idea, most recently floated by the NFL Network’s Jason La Canfora, that NFL Network “Insider” Mike Lombardi — a former personnel guy with the Browns back in the 90s who went on to become the Oakland Raiders GM who presided over the selection of JaMarcus Russell with the first overall pick — would be a candidate for the Browns GM position.

Based on what we know, it’s hard to argue with Grossi’s conclusion.

Will be back shortly with an Xs and Os post.

UPDATE: Comprehensive Mike Lombardi Analysis for Browns Fans

I like that Dan Gilbert has come out and said he regrets his Comic Sans letter because “If you’re going to predict something that doesn’t happen and you’re going to do it publicly, you’d for sure take it back”.

So he regrets it not because it was an unrealistic, childish outburst, but simply because he wasn’t correct with his unrealistic, childish outburst. Way to be, Danny!

    • Believelander

Quote’s out of context. That’s not all he said. People sure play with the truth until it becomes something else round here.

If Mike Lombardi turns out to be Joe Banner’s first hire then we are all in a lot of trouble.

Also, if case anyone missed it, today’s UniWatch had a item about some rapper named Kid Cudi (sorry if he is someone and I just don’t know it) who is “known for wearing Cleveland Indians caps,” is now working with New Era to change that (the item is near the bottom in the ticker): http://www.uni-watch.com/2012/10/31/tricks-and-treats-a-uni-watch-compendium-for-all-hallows-eve/

On a semi-related note, could this be the spirit behind the Curse of Chief Wahoo? Ya know, if you believe in curses or whatever. http://news.yahoo.com/clevelands-history-three-haunted-places-033400213.html (2nd item).

The Stosskoff Black Granite Ball at Myrtle Hill is terrific.
I went there with a couple of my older sisters when I was a nine year old punk.

I ran and touched the ball and then I started acting crazier than usual for the rest of the night. It scared them to pieces.
Once a PUNKASS always a PUNKASS.

There are a couple of Cleveland-based rappers that are making news right now. He is one of them, a guy named MGK is the other. I like both of them but I am going to assume they don’t skew to the demographics of a lot of commenters on the site. WFNY had a link to this yesterday – love it.

      • p_forever

“cleveland-based” – actually, both kid cudi and machine gun kelly are from shaker heights. and of course a rapper from shaker heights (aka land of the limo libs) is taking a stand against racist stereotypes. oh shaker, how i love thee :)

        • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

He’s from the streets dammit, how dare you?! I love the I-71 tat he’s rocking. If I ever get the balls to get tatted up, that’s on my short list. Right after dolphins around my bellybutton.

          • p_forever

can we go together? i already have the dolphins.

          • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

Definitely, next time I’m in town we’ll have to find someone who can do both of them as well as Taz spinning a basketball.

          • ClevelandFrowns

“While the rest of you are out there getting dolphins tattooed on your ankles, some down-for-life MFers are making some rather ballsy commitments.”

@P Dave wulf or wolf is awesome and working in N Olmstead I think.

          • http://www.redright88.com/ Tom_RedRight88

            I recommend G & G Tattoo in Willoughby. That’s where I went and they did a nice job: http://www.gandgtattoo.com/

          • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

Thanks – when I’m 20 Zimas deep in Lake County that’s where I’m headed.

          • Defenestration

If I had a tattoo for every time I’ve included the phrase “when I’m 20 Zimas deep in Lake County” in a statement, I would look like DeShawn Stevenson.

      • Warburton MacKinnon

Don’t quite know why..but a white kid rapping about basketball, wearing a jersy with a double x on it and him being apperantely about 5’6″and 120lbs,and the chances of him having anything XX but his ego being close to NIL,only inspires me with disgust.

        • ClevelandFrowns

For what it’s worth, MGK is like 6’5, maybe even taller.

    • nj0

And the rappers shall lead them…

    • NeedsFoodBadly

Kid Cudi is a pretty big deal, been around for a couple of years at least. Dude’s from Solon, I think.

      • p_forever

        SHAKER HEIGHTS lol see above

        • NeedsFoodBadly

huh, according to wikipedia, we’re both right.

  • https://twitter.com/jimkanicki jimkanicki

i really like delonte west. check his timeline today:

    https://twitter.com/CharleeRedz13

he’s gotta find a team, no? cavs maybe not best fit, but someone’s got pick him, right?

    • nj0

I want to start a team just to employ him.

    • Beeej

Yes, but how does he feel bout’ hot sauce in the bag?

    • NeedsFoodBadly

I’m sure he’ll be back in an NBA jersey this year. He did good for the Mavs last year, and he’ll play for cheap.

I love the guy, personally. It’s got to be extremely difficult to manage something like BPD on the public stage, and he’s never been violent or hurt anyone. I am curious if anyone know more about why he was suspended/dropped by Dallas – I’ve heard things about outbursts in the locker room after preseason games, but no concrete details. Must’ve been really bad.

But hey, if Ray Lewis can get NFL commercials after stabbing a couple guys, and Metta World Peace is still in the league, doesn’t Delonte deserve another shot?

    • p_forever

if delonte comes back to cleveland it’ll be the best reason to go watch the cavs play, for sure.

      • Jim

You apparently haven’t watched Kyrie Irving play then. He scored 29 effortlessly last night and his cross-over is the best I’ve seen since A.I. in his prime. An absolute stud in the making.

        • p_forever

I know kyrie is good, and don’t mean to imply otherwise. But delonte will always be my favorite cav, that’s all.

  • ChuckKoz

dunno about that, but was hearing talks on Dan Patrick yesterday that Mangini was a strong candidate to get a new gig this year, with an eye on San Diego

    • GrandRapidsRustlers

It is terrifying to think of what Mangini could do in San Diego with actual talent.

      • nj0

If history is any indication: greatly exceed expectations and then get run out of town in two or three years.

        • Warburton MacKinnon

One if he does a Marty…which he would, basically disagreeing with Smith.

    • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

My kids will grow up Charger fans if that’s the case.

    • https://twitter.com/jimkanicki jimkanicki

mangini will have a tall order managing phil rivers. he’s got talent, no denying. perhaps he’s just a frustrated high-level competitor. but man… i dont know how i would manage his on-field shenanigans.

    • ClevelandFrowns

      Who was saying this?

      • ChuckKoz

        I think it was Florio

  • BernietoCatcherGuy

For all the good that Mangini was, I’m not sure he had the best Offensive Coordinator. Have you seen Daboll’s work at KC?

    • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

Agreed. I have no idea how a team couldn’t win games with a tandem like Brady Quinn and Matt Cassel.

      • BernietoCatcherGuy

especially when you run the ball less than times in a game with Jamaal Charles as your RB!

        • Petefranklin

With the Hilldozer to take the short yardage pounding.

      • http://profiles.yahoo.com/u/353RMCG4SCQSGHPMKN7TMON654 S. A

But KC does have legitimate playmakers in Dwayne Bowe and Jamaal Charles (who only had 7 yds rushing last wk).

        • http://twitter.com/cpmack Chris M

Not arguing the point on Charles, I guess, since Oakland probably had 8 in the box the entire game.

Unless Dwayne Bowe is throwing the ball to himself, I’m not exactly sure what he has to do with anything.

      • BernietoCatcherGuy

Let me correct: Jamaal Charles only carried 5 times in the game against Oakland.

Oh, and on Lombardi, I like what Al Davis had to say about him – “Mike Lombardi has been fired from every job he’s had. Every job. He can’t get a job. Last year he was fired from a job he was working for for nothing. He was fired from Denver.”

  • Cranky M

Sweet lord…if they get rid of Heckert, i will be very upset. If they get rid of Heckert and replace him with Lombardi, i will honestly give up on the Browns.

  • Cranky M

Frownie, if you can spearhead a movement/petition to keep Heckert (or, at the least, not hire Lombardi), i promise to never criticize Total QBR again.

    • Kamov

For making such a clutch post, I award this 1 anonymous like and one logged-in like. If you had made this post on an older, currently untrafficked, Frowns posting, it would have only been worth a single like, and your FCR would not have benefited as much. Of course, many other factors go into calculating FCR, like number of headstands and ability to do potential headstands and other factors considered relevant by experts on FCR, so while this sends your FCR upwards, be mindful that if a future poster goes on to win the thread, your FCR will be worth less since it did not result in a clutch-enough post to declare victory over the internet.

    • Warburton MacKinnon

Down with no Lombardi(he has kind of made a career out of badmouthing Cleveland, the Browns, and everyonelse he has ever worked for or with). Not sure Heckert is decent or just better than who came before him,not like that is a steep curve, although he has yet to have a draft pick on this team make a pro bowl…..Savage had one(two if you count Cribbs),and Mangini had one. So right now Heckert is 0-and however many picks he has had, compared to the last two guys drafting, just saying even though many in Cleveland think his picks are good/great so far the League doesn’t.

  • Petefranklin

Someone please make sure Lombardis draft record that Kanicky mentioned gets forwarded to Berea STAT!

  • rodofdisaster

    Super Bowl Rings:

    George Kokinis 1
Mike Lombardi 0 in “over 20 years’ NFL front office experience”

    • http://www.autismspeaks.org/ PML

If Mike Lombardi becomes the next GM of the Browns I will poop in a paper bag and set it on fire outside of Berea.

      • Warburton MacKinnon

Maybe Frowns can(if such a thing happens, the hiring of Lombardi) set up a membership tier for the site with the only requierments being relieving yourself(piss,or leaving a bag of shit) on the doorstep of Browns Headquarters..or doing either of those on Arts gravesite…but you have to post pics of the act..thus a membership tier.

        • ClevelandFrowns

          THIS IS AN IDEA.

          • Warburton MacKinnon

If it gets folks to piss on Art I am for it,but at the same time I NEVER said it was you know a good or rational idea.

  • Chris P.

Is this the current open thread?

Question for all you lawyer people – what type of lawyer is the right lawyer for stuff like city and charter law and ohio revised code issues?

    • Chris P.
